Well the straw broke the camels back yesterday. I sold the monster from hell this evening to CarMax!! It's gone for good, some elses problem now!!

I got my Personal Porperty Tax bill in the mail yesterday. I dam near fell off my chair. It was over a grand for only 5 months of ownership.

I called the county tax office to get a reading on why was my vehicle valued at a price that I did not pay. The value is based on retail value as of January 1st of that model year. For example if the value of the vehicle is 60K on Janaury 1st and I bought it in July at 45K. The tax is based on that 60K not the 45K I bought at. The county does not care what you paid for it, just the value on January 1st.

There is another little factoid. "Truck" tags bring only issues and many of them! Because of the "Truck" tags I don't get the Personal Property Tax Relief that an automobile does. The relief is only meant for "Automobiles" not "Trucks". Changing the tags to "Automobile" tags may get you the tax relief. But,that's a big may get you! Once the county knows it's a "truck" they are on it like white on rice! I was so hosed!

Another one is; because it's a "truck" and it has "truck" tags, I get slamed again for the EZ pass. EZ pass conciders "Trucks" as commercial vehicles!! Hosed again! Ouch!!

Yet another one. Becasue it has "truck" tags, you may be subjected to HOA rules. Becasue "trucks" are concidered "Commercial" vehicles. And "commercial" vehicles are not allowed to be parked within the association property. Hosed yet again! Nasty grams out the ying-yang!

Yet another one. Ever see those signs that say "No Trucks" Yes, if you have those "truck" tags on they mean you as what your driving is concidered a "truck"! A truck is a truck is a truck and by no other name is a truck!! Hosed yet again!

Do I have buyers remorse? No, not at all! I got rid of one big headache! I was running through more blood pressure pills then diesel fuel! So when the truck went off to the back of the CarMax lot this evening I was jumping for joy! Gone is the biggest headache I've ever owned! Gone are the nasty grams that were left on my windshield telling me my vehicle was subject to towing! Gone are the EZ pass citations for not having the correct EZ pass, for which I called and they sent and coded the pass wrong! Gone is the shitty dealership that did not know a dam thing. Gone period!

I'm back to driving my 12 year old GM that has 455 air. That's paid for! Remote start - Kids go start the truck for dad so it's warm for me. A GPS that I can punch the screen and change while the truck is moving! Free radio vs. crappy customer service from sirius.

In the 5 months that I owned it I only put 500 miles on it. CarMax asked me why? I said.... It's a "Truck"!

What in the world is personal property tax? In Oregon we don't even have sales tax. My truck was registered for 4 years when I bought it and it is only $84 for every two years after that. Doesn't matter if it is a ram or civic. Some states just seem out of control!

Jeeeez. You didnt need to get rid of your truck, you need to get rid of your state! Holy socialism batman!!
No kidding, that is crazy! Just got my registration in the mail for my next two years and I was pleasantly surprised, $40! And that is based on the sticker price of my truck. :)

Missouri has Personal Property Tax, mine for this year on Blue was $217, they said she is valued at $4770

Registration was $83.50 for two years. Every state has some racket going on. My home state California taxes EVERYTHING!!!

Every State is different. I've lived in VA before Hampton, VA Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk so I can sympathize with your personal property tax bill. When I moved back to MN they get you via the cost of the license plates. This year my license plates cost $416.75 to renew them so they get you either way you go. Your best bet is get out of the State of VA.

No personal property tax here, just yearly renew of tag. mine should run about $100 in June. They do get you when you register the vehicle, excise tax, tire disposal fee crap, ya a tax on tires that do not exixst, but you have to pay it. crazy.

As for the HOA thing, a lot of them are like that with the no trucks parked where they can be seen, a load of BS but those are the rules, so read the contract befroe you join the HOA.

Sorry to hear the OP sold his truck, really sucks.

Wow... no PPT on vehicles here in Oklahoma. I pay $83.50 per year for the tags for my truck. You do pay a state sales tax on the vehicle when first purchased, that was around $1K. Same taxes apply to cars and pickups.

We also have no vehicle inspection laws. We used to, but the state gov't voted it off the books!

That is a horror story. I would have hoped better for a state like Virginia, but I guess its proximity to New York finally allowed it to catch the tax disease. Government, even sometimes at the more local level, seems totally out of control. It's become a money-eating monster with no lack of appetite. I hate these "occupy" idiots, because their base value system is about zero...but...it's probably getting to a point of some kind of revolution. I just hope that it can be done at the polls in the near future rather than in the streets and at the barrel of a gun. That may sound crazy, but in many critical areas government and the politicians involved have become unresponsive to the majority of the people.

On the truck issue in VA, is the "truck" category more impactive there because it's a 1-ton? Would your situation have some different elements if it was a 1/2 ton, putting the assessed value aside? On that towing issue, I'm guessing that's because it's a 1-ton? I've seen some parking issues in some cities that have regs like that...putting a 1-ton pickup in a commercial category. Our city had such a reg, but it was finally removed when it was realized how archaic that 50's reg was when a 1-ton vehicle actually was only a commercial vehicle. If you have a state or city that has such a law, it's usually based on an ancient reg. In "the old days", a 1-ton vehicle was often rather big and a bit of a safety hazard when parked on-street in residential or some other areas. Classifying a 1-ton pickup in that way today is totally ridiculous.

Texas is one of those states without a PP tax as named...no income tax either. Sales tax, though a PITA, may be about the fairest way to tax, and we have that. BLKSVT, here in Texas, aren't our pickup tags usually a few dollars lower than most automobile tags? My pickups/trucks have always had lower license plate fees than my cars. My wife's Chevy HHR could be classified as either, and at time of purchase the dealer suggested that we get "truck" plates. It saved about $20. I think in Texas we still look at pickups as a sacred category...LOL! That may change with a 1-ton, I don't know about that. My sales tax on my '12 1/2 ton Ram was about $280, and that's a one time tax at purchase.

Sorry to hear about your tax issues with the state of VA. I would also be looking for a house max to off that to as well. I know family, kids schools, jobs can be tough to move, but there is no way I could cope with that sort of stuff.

IL can be horrible but sales tax is a one time percentage of purchase price or estimated value, probably which ever is higher at the time of purchase & plates are graduated for weight. B truck (half ton) is typically around $120 per year.*I think*

I live in PA and the only thing the gov. charges for my truck was the 6% sales tax when I bought it and $81 registration renewal fee every year. I guess I can't complain. But "personal property tax"? THAT IS GRADE A BS! :wow:

Is it just me or did that sound like a whole lot of b!tching? lol

Holy socialism batman!!
This was funny!

As for California, I think we should cut that state off altogether and swap it with Hawaii, then not call it part of the USA anymore...their regulations are ridiculous

As for the big government, I think that at some point there's going to be a new revolution, if "we the people" ever get smart enough to do anything about it.

I think in FL it is extremely cheap as well, but honestly don't remember what I paid...
