I have been browsing the forum looking for common issues on the V10. I just bought a 97 2500 V10 2WD and I intend to use it for towing quite often.

Is upgrading the stock transmission cooling a good idea? My trailer is 8.5x20 7500# to 9000# loaded and the box is 7'6" tall, basically like a camper but this is a custom car hauler. I actually use it for transporting my band equipment (speakers, lights, drums.)

I got the truck real cheap, $2450, so I am willing to put some money into it. Right now it doesn't idle until you really give it some gas and get the RPMs up to 4000 or so for a bit, then it seems to idle fine. It also misfires a bit. I do not smell unburnt fuel in the exhaust and it does this before the engine goes into closed loop mode, so I am guessing the fuel injectors need some TLC.

I also heard what sounded like a stuck lifter before the oil warmed up. Probably some seafoam will take care of this?

I have never owned a Dodge before, so I'm totally unfamiliar with them. The V10 sure feels like a torque monster even though it's not running right yet, so I am really looking forward to getting it straightened out.

your going to want to clean the injectors go pick up some carb clean soak them overnight and spray them out in the morning your going to have to remove the intake manifold that should help with the idle issues and it will wake the truck up quite a bit

There aren't a lot of big hills around me, and for the most part, I just haul my butt around the city. I have towed this trailer at around 7500# loaded with my 2005 Suburban K1500 5.3 a few times, and it had enough torque (barely) but the tongue was too heavy unless the trailer is loaded very carefully. However, the Suburban has a trans temp sensor and a good cooler.

I saw some aftermarket transmission coolers that appear to fit the V10 for $65 and if there is any chance I may need it, I would rather spend $65 on a cooler than a bunch more on a rebuild. :)

Haha, fortunately, I plan on driving it maybe 3000 to 5000mi a year pulling a trailer, so the fuel dollars will be well-spent.

I am waiting for my buddy's shop to get done with it now. They can't seem to figure out a problem with the engine oiling up its air filter. I hope this is not a valve issue.
