I had made a query about brake pad & rotor replacement in a previous thread. Since I only have 44K on my truck, Thunderhorse expressed surprise that I would only get 44k with light use and he gets 70 with heavy use.

So, I decided to start a new thread since the topic is a bit different.

After I replaced the blowout with the spare, I drove for 1500 miles to get home from the holidays with no indication of noise or damage. However, after arriving home, the rear dragging sound was quite noticeable when I next drove her. I have had her parked all week & will inspect this weekend before I go to the parts house.

If it is not wear, has anyone experienced a blowout where something was damaged? If so, what was it? It sounds just like dragging pads from the rear.

I am not sure about your particular circumstance

I had a spike go into my Right Front factory tire,
I went to a tire shop & bought a tire of another brand, it had a slightly different tread & height.

I had told them before hand that i was leaving the next day on a 3,000 mile trip to return home.
The tire shop put the new tire on my Left Rear & put the left rear tire on the Right Front.

I can only assume that the reason for that would be that the left rear tire is the only tire that may have less stress on it.
That left the 2 front tires matched & the right rear is your main drive tire, it is the one that gets the power from the engine & transmission, the left rear more or less holds the truck level & hardly ever has any torque applied to it

Thanks. Interesting info. I had no idea that there is a difference in the drive of the rear wheels. The factory tire that blew was the right(passenger side) rear. I have a slip differential, a $950 option. Does that change anything?

Will pull the tire & inspect this morning. Will report back as to what is the source of the sound.

I imagine that if the 2 rear tires were not the same size and you have lsd,. that could be the source,. what speed does it occur,. does it do it at low speed

id the spare is not a full size,. its just a emergencies tire,. for short distance,. fix it as soon as possible, if full size and same size as other side of the rear tire then you should not have problem with the lsd

When I inspected, found plenty of pad and negligible rotor wear.

About 30 miles ago, I was going through a very heavily sanded mountain pass. When I looked at the noisy wheel, the rotor seemed very dirty; so, I cleaned it & put the wheel back on. Sound is much less.

I will drive her a bit. She brakes well.

To answer Crusher's other point, the sound is only when braking. It sounds just like pads need replacing. It is a dragging sound not a squeak or squeal.

With a little luck, nothing to be concerned about. We'll see. Have a nice weekend.

Good question &, I really didn't check. I believe the sound is now gone & she brakes well. If there is a resurrection of the problem, will check. After all, if not rotors or pads, must be the caliper?

could also be the parking brakes that are inside the rear disc

I agree with crusher. Mine was making the same noise. No heat from the wheels indicating sticking calipers, so I removed the wheel that was making the noise. The brake lining had come loose from the parking brake shoes. I removed the lining, replaced the rotor and caliper along with the wheel, and no more noise.
