I've searched this forum for octane preference and a lot of the threads were for the 4th Gen rams. What are y'all using ? I'd prefer to stick with 87 unless it's detrimental.

I should be picking up the truck tomorrow! Can't wait!

Every manual I’ve read; from 2005 Rams through 2012 Rams, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Chargers, 20919 Chargers and Rams, and a 2020 Ram have always listed 89 octane gas as recommend, and 87 octane as allowed.
We’ve always used 89-91 octane gas in our hemis.
Down here; the price per gallon goes up $.40 per gallon between grades.

I use 91 from Chevron ... I did use 89 for a whole year to see what it would do and my mpg, power overall performance was shit ....

I will never again run anything but 91 from Chevron on my truck, mine is a 2018 Big Horn .... believe me, you can run these trucks on 91 without a tune, those who tell you that you need a tune to run 91 on these trucks are either actual people who sell custom tunes or know of people who sell tunes and are advocating for them ....

Thanks! Isn't "mid-grade" 89? The only thing is the costs start to really go up to fuel these things... All of you have said mid-grade (or even higher). Will I be doing detrimental damage to the truck by running 87? Just curious. What will I see in performance, fuel econ. with 87 vs 89?

Thanks!

I don't know what the price point on gas North of the border is, however, I pay about 6 bucks extra for a tank of 89 vs 87. Also important is to use top tier gas over non branded stuff. Will you see/feel performance and mileage increases between 87-89, not that you can tell, as I have used both when 89 wasn't available. If you are spending 10's of thousands of dollars for a truck, then the recommended octane should be affordable. Use 89 and you are using the octane the hemi was designed to use.

Agreed. It's probably a no-brainer to use it. I just wanted to learn more about it from your experiences. Gas does cost more here, especially since we have an anti-oil, anti-fossil fuel govt right now. They have added "carbon taxes" to the price of gas, heating oil, natural gas, etc. it looks like they will lose the next election and the next govt is promising to remove all that nonsense. We will see!
