Does anyone know how this works? I was under the impression that when a trailer was hooked up the computer would start tracking how many miles you have towed a trailer. When I was questioning the dealer on an aftermarket light bar I was informed the on board computer uesd the trailer plug and measuerd resistance to activate the towing counter. I towed a utility trailer aproximately 30 miles and the on board computer never recognized a trailer being hooked up. I used the 4 flat wire harness and all of the lights worked. is this something that only works when using the 7 round plu

This is cool, I didn't know about it. The break regulator is a different circuit that uses the 7 prong outlet to apply electric trailer breaks. It may be in there. I think the 4 prong outlet only takes care of lights.

I have a boat trailer with surge breaks and not break regulator in the truck, I'd love to have this feature.

As was mentioned above, it does only work on the 7-wire connection. I wish it worked on both since I have a boat that uses a 4-wire connection and my tent trailer that uses a 7-wire connection. Only the tent trailer will add miles to my towing mileage counter. Maybe I'll look into changing my boat connector to a 7-wire and wire a resistor across the brake wires.
