P0441 - Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow

2015 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi w/ 42k miles. Truck had been sitting for well over a week up until yesterday (was on vacation). Went to start the truck up for a Home Depot run, and a few miles down the road, I was presented with the check engine light icon. Other than the light on the dash, I couldn't tell there was any issue, truck runs just fine.

I called my dealership today to get a service appointment, and to my surprise, nothing was available (aside from oil changes) until next Thursday August 3rd! Naturally, I snatched up that next available appointment time. Curiosity got the best of me on the way home today, so I swung by AutoZone to have the code read. It was P0441, which has something to do with the evaporative emission control system? The guy at AutoZone says there's two possible scenarios - 1. The sensor has gone bad. 2. I've over filled the gas tank one too many times and the evaporative canister is full of gas? Admittedly, I do tend to top off my tank, so it very well could be that I have filled up this canister with gas and just need to drain it (per the AutoZone dude).

I'm keeping my August 3rd dealership appointment, but tomorrow I do plan to do some Google'n and YouTube'n to see if this is something I can resolve myself. Anyone ever ran across this issue and/or resolved it themselves? If so, I'd love to hear from you.

One positive I've noticed from this whole scenario is that my truck seems slightly more responsive throttle wise. I assume this is due to the MDS system being deactivated as a result of the check engine light on. Don't get me wrong, I'm an MDS fan and appreciate how it helps out with the fuel economy. But I do have to say, I can really tell when it is not activated, not chugging or throttle lag at all. I can see why some want to permanently deactivate it.

Literally picked up my truck yesterday from dealership for the same exact thing, I also have a 2013 1500 with 44,000 miles on it and had the same senario. Supossedly the dealer replaced the EVAP purge solenoid (error code P0441). The stealer would have charged me $350.00 if I didnt have the extended warranty so I walked out the door having to pay just my deductable which is $100.00.

Thanks for the reply. So was this was covered under the power train warranty? My bumper to bumper has expired, so I may be paying out of pocket if this isn't a power train item. Thinking it is not.
I can't imagine it being a powertrain item. I'd call it fuel system
The evac canister system is an EPA control thing. Some of these controls have there own warranty.

True. I think emissions gear is a federally mandated 8/80,000 warranty

Nice, I hope that is the case. This is the second fuel system related issue I've had. First was a fuel pressure sensor @ 18k and now this @ 42k. Could be much worse circumstances, however. Still love my truck. Have a week and a day more (hopefully at most!) to look at this CEL on the dash.
just hanging on for updates ... dont mind me

I'll post a full report this Friday, assuming I have the truck back. My appointment is for Thursday morning and dropping it off Wednesday night. At this point I've just accepted the fact I'll let the dealership handle it. Not going to try and mess with anything myself. The crazy thing is, my EVIC says I'm getting slightly better mpg's even though my MDS has been deactivated for over a week now lol. Could be coincidental, I think I have been doing more highway than city lately. :4-dontknow:

So this morning I stop for gas to top off the gas tank before dropping it off at the dealership this evening for my scheduled service appointment which is tomorrow morning. I was around 1/4 tank, which is usually when I fill up anyway. Finish filling up, hop back in the truck, fire er' up and the check engine light is gone! Now before anyone asks, yes, I checked and re-tightened the gas cap on several occasions over the last week or so since the light has been on. I even left it open for a while in the driveway hoping something would just evaporate and clear the code. Perhaps that canister is emptied or evaporated enough to register OK and clear the code? Or maybe I just needed a few miles and gas fills for everything to check out OK in the system?

Either way, I'm going to keep my scheduled appointment. Still have that T25 recall that needs to be done as well and I wouldn't mind having them look it over anyway. But I'm pretty stoked that a sensor hasn't gone bad and I shouldn't have to foot the bill for a new one. Love my truck, gave er' a nice proud dash rub after I noticed the light went out lol.

I'll still post back on Friday with any results/updates.

Could have sworn I typed in the title all caps ***UPDATE*** - oh well, couldn't contain my excitement I guess. Can't edit that either?

Picked the truck up yesterday afternoon. As mentioned in my previous post, the CEL went out the day before my scheduled service appt, but I took it in anyway to have it looked over and to have that T25 recall done. The technician saw the stored P0441, ran diagnostics, checked everything over really well and said everything looks fine. He said it could have been the ole' loose gas cap, which I guess is possible.

Even though my truck is outside of the B2B warranty, they still didn't charge me anything since I was just outside of it. They even said if the sensor were to go bad with in a month or so, they would still replace it at no charge to me. Told them I really appreciated that and the will get all 10 remarks from me on the survey.

Thanks for the follow up!
Glad to hear you got away clean lol, I however have not been so lucky. My truck thew the CEL yesterday with the same code (P0441) so I took it straight back to the stealer last night, I just got a call from them syaing that the problem is now the fuel tank pressure sensor (which I thought threw a different code) in the tank and is not covered under warranty so not I have to decide wheather or not to pay them $330.00 to fix it or just buy the stupid little sensor and do it myself. I dont really look forward to dropping the tank but I'm tired of this dealership.

Ah, bummer man, sorry to hear that. But I have to say, $330 for having to drop the gas tank doesn't seem that bad to me. But yea, it's been however many weeks now and the CEL has not come back on. I do make sure I don't top off the tank anymore, in the event that was my issue to begin with.
Had P0441 come on back in February. I replaced the gas cap and after a tank of fuel, the check engine light went out. I have a Diablo Trinity so I was checking for codes randomly and in May it showed the P0441 was a pending code, but no check engine light. After doing some research, the most common things that set this code are purge solenoid, overfilling the tank, bad pcm, fuel tank pressure switch, or less likely the gas cap. Since May I have not topped off my tank and so far the code has disappeared and I have no stored codes. So there may be something to getting gas into the canister if you overfill the tank.

Agreed! Think I lucked out and that was my issue. After the initial click, I go for one more and that's it. Knock on wood the CEL has remained off for a few tanks now.
just picked up this error code today
been rough start up idle speed several times in last two weeks, but not every time, chalking it up to dampness
reset the code and hope it goes away...

anybody have any stories to tell?
I have a 2016 ram with 70k. I change the evap purge valve and the gas cap and the emissions leak detection pump.. and that engine light is still on. Anybody know what could make de po441 ? I am lost.
Welcome to the Forum!

Check the surface of the gas filler pipe where the gas cap seals against. I had some rust on that surface which was causing the error code to be set. I cleaned it with some fine sandpaper to get back to a smooth surface and then wiped off the sanding dust with a damp rag. After a few start / run cycles the code cleared.

Another possibility is the evap line that goes to the evap canister may be cracked.
