My hood had only one bad spot on it where I first thought it was bird poop. After washing it today I noticed I had many more and I want to fix them from spreading. Also I have some problems on the cab of my truck, top off my tailgate, fender and below my drivers window. If anybody would give me some info on how to fix it i would appreciate it

Looks like the clear coat is lifting. The UV rays go through the clear coat, reflect off the paint, and can't reflect back through the clear.

The only way I've found to make it look better is to 600 wet sand it careful not to go through the paint. Then you can clear coat it again. It's not sure fire and takes some time, but usually looks better.

You can buy it at any vip normally, but I would recommend a professionals opinion on it. certain clear coats wont stick well to your paint. sometimes at the good auto paint stores they have someone who knows what they are talking about, I would go check it out before you do something you'll regret.

Remember it doesnt hurt to ask, its the only way to learn

I had the same problem in all of the same spots. I striped the paint to metal, finished it with 180, primed it with epoxy primer, 320 blocked it, and reprimed. It took about 10 hours.

Looks like you need to have the whole panel painted.

Bought my truck with the same and rust... this was start to finnish. My buddy, a professional painter did the work ( I helped some) but he said even if you fix the spots the rest will peel shortly, better off stripping it with aircraft stripper and sand with 320 epoxy prime and sand with 600 and paint. If you dont want to use 2 stage (base /clear) you can use a single stage urethane. Shops will run you $4000 to strip and paint or you can do the work and have it painted cheaper around $1000-$1500

okay sorry i havent been on in awhile but appreciate the input on the subject but i still have questions. so i shouldnt just sand the spots down and shoot some clear coat on it? it sounds like the easier way and i havent really got it anywhere else besides those spots so sanding it down i would think would keep it from spreading and i would probably go a little beyond to ensure i get it. another is what is a good autobody supplier to get supplies to do this. im going to end up repainting stuff because i am going to get a new tail gate because mine is dented to shit:( so what kind of paint should i get? thanks

The thing about clearcoat is, it has to seal, if you just feather edge it the edges are actually open and the edges will start to peel...it wont last long and you will be back to square one in a year or so. If you clear the whole panel/hood/tailgate/ect... it will take but just doing spots it will look bad as the rest of the clear is older. It is really up to you as far as how much work/time/money you want to put into it and how you want it to look. It is possible to fix the spots and clear the entire truck without painting the entire truck, but you have to take your time sanding/feathering it out so the clear goes on smooth and the entire truck looks good, you want the clear to have a good bond so it doesnt peel/chip and look like crap shortly afterwards.

You have it much much worse. I had the samething happen on the door frame of my 2007 chevy impala. now i have all of the capabilitys of stripping the paint down and re-painting my self considering i have the know how and equipment but i said **** it and i experimented. What i used was the head light restorer kit from turtle wax and it worked great. the only difference from me to you is that you have it much worse then what i did. the size of my spot was just a little smaller then my hand. in your case youd benefit from just stripping it down to bare metal and repainting. Not a hard process, just a little time consuming and you need patientce. other wise you can do most of this yourself. definatly stripp it down yourself and if you dont have the confidence in spraying then bring it to a shop and have them spray it for ya.

Your clear is failing in a few different ways. Acid rain(etching), chemical fallout, and the adhesion to the base is going away. You could wetsand with 600, and follow it with a 3 coats of rattlecan clear. Wait a week, and wetsand lightly with 800 then 1500, and polish. It will look a little better, and is a good way to learn the process of post paint finishing, but it will not stop the rest from continuing to get worse. If you go this way, don't use anything other than rattle can clear, because using an expensive two component urethane clear would be a huge waste of your money. I would recommend just repainting the entire truck. You could get away with spending about $600 in materials using a midline Dupont base/clear product. That is providing you already have a compressor, gun, and a place to do it. I can provide advice on how to handle this if you like as well. I painted my first car 12 years ago, after just reading books, and talking to the paint store guy, but it came out really nice, and it can be done on a budget if you do the research.
