Great forum you all have here. I was woundering if I could get some thoughts on pricing for the 2011 I am looking at purchasing. The dealer is supposed to contact me tomorrow with my trade in value and if all sounds good I am going to go ahead with the purchase. My question is what should I pay for the truck? My Bank (USAA) does a type of pre negotiating so they got the price way down from sticker but I am curious if you all think I can squeeze a little more out of the dealer. Thanks in advance!

Not sure about pricing....I am sure others will help. Stay away from the 3:55 rear gears. You will want 3:92s. I have owned two 4th gen Rams only difference between the two were the rear gears. The Ram with the 3:92 gears is a happier truck and so is the truck owner!!

I am unable to find the package I want that also has the 3.92. I do not do a tremendous amount of towing and when I do it is not through hills so it is not that huge of a deal for me. Not that i would turn it down if it was offered ;)

#4 ·
Get the 392. U will be mad u didn't

#5 ·
No u wont. Ive driven both and yea i opted for different options instead of the gears like you. I also used the usaa pricing, had to take something off the lot!

#6 · (Edited)
Quit telling the guy he NEEDS 3.92's. He even said he doesn't plan on towing a whole lot. Hell I got 3.21's and do some towing. Never had a problem at all.
That's like telling someone they need a 4x4 when they only see snow 1 month outta the year.

Guys, I don't mean to be rude and I appreciate the input but I only put the specs up to help with a proce assessment. The specs are the specs.

Can anyone please help with a good price point for this truck AS IS?

I don't have any advice for you on this. However, since you mentioned USAA, I will be curious as to your experiences going through them as I may do the same in another couple of years or when I decide it's time for a new vehicle, so good luck with your purchase and keep us posted!

I think you are getting a fair price, but you could always try to get a little more. I bought my truck in August 2010, and it is an SLT. However, the sticker was 35,997 and I paid 27,000. That is 9K off a less expensive truck.

I would find out how USAA got to that price, if it was rebates or what, and then go to the dealer to see if they have anything on top of that. Keep in mind, most dealers have a holdback of 3% below the invoice to help them cover costs of operating, and sitting the trucks on the lot. You might use that to your advantage.

Also, if there is a similar truck on the lot that they have a "special" on, use that price and tell them that you wants yours for that "special" price, plus the cost of add-ons your truck is getting.

Thats a good price but I just got my ram 3 weeks ago and I used the USAA price match as well. My truck was stickered at 44,700. The usaa price was 36,000. But then the salesman came up to me and said he got me an even better deal. I got the truck for 34,400...... I was surprised that I got even more off the USAA price, I wasnt plannin on even trying for a better deal. BTW my purchase was a ram sport crew cab, options include, uprgaded sound system, dual climate, 430N radio, sun roof, tow package, spray in bed liner, tow brake, bucket seats (comes standard on sport, as well as hemi) 4x4 sport hood and some other little things.... I love the truck, no regrets!

There are way too many variables and it is a *brand new month*

I stumbled onto the ram site earlier and the full incentive details for July weren't even posted yet.

Prices (with incentives) can easily swing $1k or more from month to month. There are sometimes deals in certain areas of the country that won't apply to people in other parts of the country.

When I bought my Sport a few months ago the best I could do was (I think, I'd have to check) about $8600 off sticker? However I had another dealer ready to sell me a Big Horn for $10k off sticker just 50 miles up the road. Unfortunately that wasn't the truck I wanted. Different packages also have slightly different profit margins. When I say "best I could do" I mean I walked out of the dealership, called them 2 hours later and tried to get them to sell me a different color truck for the same price... after 15 mins they called back and said no way they could do it unless I also paid the extra $225 paint upcharge.

I actually had very good luck with a number of dealerships by emailing and asking for a no BS I'll come in tomorrow price. I wouldn't necessarily give them your real name for that, but it'll give you another data point.

I would walk in with the printout from USAA in your pocket and shoot for maybe $1k lower, but don't be disappointed if you walk out close to that # if it's what you're ready to pay.

Well I talked with the dealership today and they are still waiting for the Trade-in value to come back. I am working the deal from South Dakota and the Truck is in Alabama, where we are PCSing to next week. I sent them a bunch of pics, VIN and such so I guess it is harder to determine the value from 1500 miles away ;) . At this point I am wondering if I am better off just waiting for the 2012 to hit the lot. Hmmm.

#18 ·
Why would you buy a pickup from 1500 miles away? I have 9 dealerships within 45 minutes of me, granted one is the biggest volume dealer in SW region and another in number two...Is there not anything you can compromise on closer?

I bought mine when I was on leave. Military towns try and F you over. They were telling me how good of a deal I was getting on a hardly any optioned '11 Bighorn where I'm stationed in VA. I had already done my researched and well I'm not stupid either. I bought an '11 sport in Memphis Tn that was loaded up and 5-6k more and I got it 5k cheaper than the bighorn they were offering me. I wasnt even going to buy one in Memphis just went to look at what they had. Well they wanted to sell a truck so I gave em my business. I used the "I buying one in VA in 4 days when I go back and this is what they are giving it to me for" I got a great deal on the truck. I would also look while in route to you're new command. Me and the wife were constantly surfing the web for the right vehicle on our 1k drive on leave. If you're gonna buy for sure I would do they same.

Go to NADA.com and price it with options. Dealer hold back is another 3% of sticker price. A general rule of thumb I have found is that the "true" dealer cost is about 89% of sticker on a well optioned truck. Of course, they probably don't want to sell at "true" invoice, because they need to make money. But you also have VERY high trade in values working in your favor right now!

If I were you, I would take 89% of sticker, then deduct current incentives, and offer that. (In my region in June, a 44,000 Big Horn had $5,250 in rebates, getting you down to about $33,900 net) On your trade in, take the NADA value of your vehicle in "excellent" condition, if it is anywhere close, an add a couple thousand dollars to that. Then, go to the dealer on the last day of the month and make your offer. They may hit a volume bonus at certain levels, and your vehicle may be the one that gets them there. Ie, they may actually sell it at our near the true cost, and give you more for trade in than you expect. If they don't take it, you can always work up a little from there. However, you may be surprised how cheaply you can buy a vehicle using this technique! Let them know you know what the cost is, you know what your trade is worth, and be firm.

That's it right there! I also bought mine on Christmas Eve...end of year yada yada . Primate I cant tell you the number of dealers we called while in route! I would shoot for 10k at the least, they can do it. Let em know your gonna buy one whether its this guy or the next. Good luck and happy shopping. Keep us posted on how things go. Be safe on your pcs move :)

BTW usaa is showing $9191 off a '11 quadcab laramie 4x4 in my area....

I am not sure I agree with your analysis that trade values are very high. If you are trading a fuel effecient newer car, that is definately the case. Used cars have increased in value in the last 6 months. Now there is also a reduction in low mileage used cars that are 2009 and newer, but 2008 and older, pre-economic downturn, they are plentiful, look at production numbers of a given model if you would like hard evidence.

#33 ·
You are correct about fuel efficient cars, and mid size cars too are up significantly. But I would contend, based on my limited research, that others are up as well if they are clean, and not too old. I recently helped a friend who was going to trade and he had a 2009 or 10 GMC Canyon, loaded out, and in the past year, the trade in value had gone UP by about 20% on NADA! Also, I bought a used 2009 Nissan Murano a couple of years ago. I've put 30,000 miles on it, and the trade in value has dropped less than $2000. Most of my research does involve vehicles newer than 2008 and you pointed out that the newer stuff is bringing good values, while the older stuff may not be. But if you have a relatively new vehicle, take a look at the trade value, current rebates on what you want, and you may be able to upgrade MUCH cheaper than you imagined.

I am trading in a 2005 RAM 1500 SLT with 57000 miles on it. I would expect the trade in to be around 12k - 14k but it was hit by hail damage to the tune of 4k which I am sure they can get dome much cheaper. All repairs can be done by PDR according to the insurance company so if I can get 10K for her I would be very happy. Here are some pics http://imageshack.us/g/268/tjtruck1.jpg/

I bought a loaded Sport Crew 4x4 MSRP $49500 in May for $14k under plus ACV for my trade. They had to go 250 miles to get that truck, because of the super exclusive Rambox!
I am about to try and buy my brother-in-law (21 yr old, first vehicle purchase) an Express 4x4 MSRP $31000, shooting for $7-8k under. Won't buy at less than $6k under. This truck they will have to go 180 miles away. Its crazy that is the closest 4x4 Express in any color.

Yeah i have 3.55's and my truck hauls A$$!

I had a chance to drive a new 2011 for a few day that had the 3.55's. I missed my 3.92's. I didn't think I would see that big of a difference, but I did. The 3.92's are nice.
