I was given a set of oem running boards for the 13 ram and it came without the hardware bolts so I ordered them from Dodge and I picked them up yesterday. I cant figure out how to install the nuts that hold the bolts on to the frame. What is a rivet nut and how does it secure the running board hardware to the frame. If I could post pics I would. Thanks for the help.

A rivnut is a rivet that is threaded in the inside. You use a specific "tool" to collapse the rivnut and it spreads and locks in place in the hole on the body of the truck. The "tool" is a bolt, washer and a nut. If this tool didn't come with the HW package you got then you need to go back to the dealer and order one ($10-$15)...or perhaps they have a used one they can sell or let you borrow.

If you look at the bottom side of the boards you will see some channels. The bolts will slide in the channels. When the mounting bracket is in the correct position, the bolts will go through bracket holes and the nuts will go on the bottom.

Ok thanks so just to clarify I can't just tighten it down with the screw the kit came with it wont crimp that way I have to get this tool to make it crimp inside the frame.

Your talking about the bolts at the bottom of the running boards I think.Im talking about the rivet nuts that go on the frame of the truck to hold the running board hardware I cant post any pics here yet that would make it easier to explain.

I actually couldn't sleep last night & i thought about switching my nerf bars from my '09 Ram over to the 2015 Ram when i get it
I am going to screw a mounting bolt into the body panel where it should go
The bolt will have a THIN Nut loosely threaded onto it, after threading the bolt into the correct hole, i am going to thread the nut tightly against the panel & am going to weld the nut to the body using either MIG or TIG.
Then after doing that to all of the mounting holes, i will place the nerf bars into position & screw the bolts into place through the nerf bars, welded nut, & the body.
The bolts would really be solidly held into place

My current setup

another way to fish a bolt into a tight spot
