Here's some info on a radio upgrade if you're interested. I swaped out the stock 130 RES to a 730N RHR with Nav, Uconnect, Satellite and a rear camera. It was a pretty easy swap.
It was ALL plug and play. As long as you already have the satellite antenna its pretty easy. I went to Harbor Freight tools and bought a dash removal kit for $5. There was three screws to remove on the dash (a couple more if you have the center console) then you pop the dash off. There are four screws holding the radio in. Remove those and the radio slides right out. Unplug the factory wiring harness, the FM antenna and the satellite antenna. Plug it all back into the new radio and slide it back in place. The lockpick just plugs right in too. No wires to cut. Then the rear camera power, ground and video feed plugs right into the lockpick. The only thing I had to do was extend the power and ground wire on the camera. If you dont have the lockpick, I think you would find a power and ground at the rear of the truck and tap into those but with the lockpick you run those wire right to it so you need to extend them. Very easy to do. The hardest part was climbing under the truck and zip tying the wires along the brake line to the front of the truck. Once you do that, you have to find the plastic cap that covers the hole on the firewall for a clutch if you had a standard tranny. I removed that cap(two bolts), drilled a small hole in it and fed the wires through that and into the cab. Then I just used a little silicone to fill the hole. I also mounted the camera into the tailgate handle where the factory camera would go. It looks identical to the factory setup. The camera I bought came with the drill bit to cut the correct size hole in the tailgate handle. Once it was all in, I turned the truck on and everything worked perfectly. With this set up, you don't need the dealer to flash the computer for the camera to work either. And with the lockpick, you get a bunch more benefits too like the ability to add front and side cams (up to four I think), video IN feeds for anything you want like an Iphone video cable or even an xbox. You get video OUT feeds to if you want to add headrest monitors. Its a pretty cool little device. The only thing I would warn you about is the lockpick CHR 550 apparently has a few "bug" issues according to the guy I spoke to. He recommended going with the new V4 model. I guess its a little more stabile. It lacks a little of the Iphone integration that the CHR550 has but I didn't want any problems. My Iphone still works great with the V4. All in all, it was a pretty easy install. Just set aside a couple of hours, take your time and you'll be fine. I'm no mechanic nor do I have a lot of electrical experience and even I found it to be pretty easy. I do have some pics that I can post if it will help. If you plan on doing it, I think you will find that oemautopartsco.com is the best place to use. There is a guy there named Doug. He is very knowledgable about these systems and can answer any questions.

Awesome! Question for you though, I have a 2009, and for the moment, I don't plan on having the camera upgrade. Would I need the LockPick? I'm kinda new to all this, but really like the upgraded radio.

If I went with the NAV radio, is the stock SAT antennae useable?

Thanks, great post!

There is a difference between the 2009 and 2011. The way I understand it is this. From 2011 on, the Satellite antenna is a dual antenna. It runs the satellite radio and the Nav. Prior to 2011, the Sat antenna only ran the satellite radio, it's not a dual antenna. So I think you would have to add another Nav antenna. Also there is a difference in the radio itself. There is a "high speed bus" and a "low speed bus" radio. Im not sure whats in the '09. You would have to check on that. As far as the lockpick, if you're not interested in the camera, its not really necessary but if you change your mind, you can always add it later. Its pretty easy. The other thing you'll need is a mini mic if you get a radio with Uconnect, which I ran up the drivers side A pillar, under the front of the head liner and used two sided sticky tape to stick it to my windshield under the black Ram head. You cant even see it. Check oemauto, they will definitely steer you in the right direction.

The 2009 was the first year of the High Speed Can Bus Rams
The 2009 used the RER Media Center radio
the dimensions of RER, RHR, RHB, RBZ, REN, & RES radios are all the same
The RER, RHR, & RHB radios have Navigation as well as everything else, if they have all the modules.
If you buy the radio through http://www.oemautopartsco.com/ they will tell you about what you need for your radio, & if it is included in their price, ask about the smart phone connectors too, if you use one

They very seldom have the RHB with Navigation available

Great information, thanks a bunch. I will be contacting them next week. There are so many variations of these radios, it is very confusing!

Hitch Power/Camera Placements

Rob-GG, thanks for the awesome post. I'm thinking of upgrading my RES (130) radio to the 430 (RBZ) and adding a camera. Ram really needs to make the camera standard, even if it's with a rearview mirror monitor. Not having one on a truck is criminal here in NY.

Is there a way to get into to cab without drilling through the firewall? I'd rather not drill at all, but I thought you could go through the back of the cab then under the kick plate.

I am thinking of using a wireless camera and putting it in the hitch, modifying a plain hitch cover to hold the camera and using the trailer wiring power the camera and transmitter (similar to those brake light power hitch covers, but using the running lights instead of brake lights.) (Master Lock has a similar system, but I would like a more permanent look). Has anyone done this, and is there any interference with Bluetooth or other devices when using the wireless camera?

Awsome install! I plan on doing the same thing as soon as i get done with my deployment. I just hate the prices they charge for the stereo. Just the 730N RHR & lockpick will total over $1500. I guess that the price to keep the factory look. Also, consider some wire loom. Especially where the camera wires pass from the tailgate to the truck bed. It will help protect wires from being rubbed and causing a short. I like the clean look of the camera in the tailgate handle but, I was planning on somewhere in the bumber so the camera is still viewable even while the tailgate is down.

mmcglynn264, first, thanks for your service.

I hear you on the cost. I'm planning to get mine used. There are a few on ebay that are inexpensive, but you can also get them from salvage: car-part.com. The only warning I've heard is that the newer units require unlock codes, and only a dealer can unlock them without the code. It's a PITA, but if you can get an $800 for less than $400 (the RBZ) or a $1300 one for less than $800 (the RHB), it may be worth a minor headache.

Cabana Dan, You can go through the back of the cab and under the kick plate, but believe it or not, it's much easier to just run the wires up to the firewall and into the cab. You don't have to drill through the firewall at all. The hole is already there, you just need to drill through the plastic cover over the hole. It's very easy. As far as the hitch mount camera, the only problem I see there, is that if you use a trailer hitch, you'll have to take the camera out. Kind of defeats one of the big purposes of having the camera. Good luck

Mmcglynn264, like Cabana Dan said, thanks for your service. Good luck with your install. If you want the camera near the bumper, I would suggest using a license plate mount camera instead of drilling through the bumper. From what I've read, these trucks have very thin chrome and drilling into it might cause rust problems later. And thanks for the tip on the wire loom, sounds like cheap insurance to keep from having the wires get cut.

Rob-GG, I never thought about it creating a weak point for rust. Thanks for that, I was looking at drilling the hole because the plate mount ones seem to stick out a bit when looking at the back of the truck. However, since you bring up the rust issue, I thing I will go with a plate mount. Plus, if the bullet one ever failed, i woul have to find another one the same diameter in order to fit anyway while the plate mount ones are everywhere! Thanks for the advice.

Good job on the install, looks real clean.

The camera that you used, is that one from Dodge? The only thing I don't like about the camera is that mine does no have the distance lines, like the one you put in. The line on the sides that go from green to yellow to red that help you guage how far away you are from objects. Are these a part of the camera or something that came with the lockpick?

Thanks for the advice guys! I bought a Pyle camera (accurate name) and went for the wireless. What a waste of time. Fortunately, it was the same price as the wired version, and I've got plenty of RCA cable lying around. I'll be running the cable this weekend and will post some install pictures.

On the radio, I bought an RBZ on ebay for under $500 (will report back on condition and any issues) and I bought the CHR550 on Amazon for $285 (already have that in hand and it looks a-okay).

I am also working on a custom built mount for the iPhone using this Belkin stand (http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=609449). I got it from Home Depot online for $20. The base unit detaches from the upright, and I think I can get a custom mount for the dash tray (that weird tray that says "Dodge" above the center console). I can then run the iPod cable directly into the center console. The other option is the floor tray in front of the center bench seat.

So far, the only drawback is that the lockpick iPod cable has a custom plug, not the normal USB port at the end of the sync cord. The Belkin has the normal USB, which means I need a female iPod to female USB adapter (no such part exists, but I've got my MacGuver on).

Just a thought, try to identify the what kind of connection is on the module side of the ipod cable. Maybe you can find a USB to whatever that connection is. I tried to check online as I don't have the lockpick but I couldn't find an image of just the cable or even an image of the CHR550 that shows that input on the module. Since you have it in hand, you might be able to fifgure it out or you can call coastaltech and ask them if there is a way to make that ipod cable a USB instead.

No, the camera is not from dodge. They wanted about $300 for a stock one built into the tailgate handle. I ordered a crimestopper cam from Sonicelectronics for about $50 and mounted it in the handle myself. It has a feature where you can turn the lines on or off. It's my understanding that the factory one does not have that option.

Could you post the model number of the crimestopper camera you used? I would like to have the distance lines on my system and if I could swap the stock camera for that one, I might.

Thanks
