Lately my factory radio will shut off completely and go to a black screen. Moments later it will turn back on and reload all stations like it’s resetting after an update.

However this happens randomly three or four times while I’m driving sometimes several times back to back or two times in ten minutes etc. There’s just no way to call it or expect it. It just happens nothing changes or is added or deleted, it just cuts off and restarts.

I thought it was acting off my I-phone being present but sometimes it’s not in the truck so I have no clue.

No no idea, still does it on occasion. I believe is that it has something to do with having a cell phone connected to the radio. I suspect the software in the radio is not playing ice with the phone. Weather its an I-phone or an Android phone. ANYTIME I try to stream music from my phone, like through Amazon for example, the radio starts its resetting. However, my friend has the same phone and truck and has zero issues.

One day I will buy another RAM but I see the new 2019/20 RAM with that large radio is doing the same thing. At least with my radio, the smaller 8x8 screen can be replaced with an aftermarket one that probably won't be an issue. If you have that large I-pad thing forget it there is no aftermarket solution. Can't believe that RAM won't address, just bury their heads in the sand and say "no problem here folks."

I am really thinking going aftermarket just can't wrap my head around $600 and that's diy not even taking it to a stereo shop

So I finally fixed the radio. As it turns out the radio was losing power intermittently. The wire that supplies power from the block under the dash and just behind the parking/emergency brake was shorting out. I suspected at first it was the connector between the wire from the radio to where it goes in the block.

The pins looked a little too wide and loose. I tried that and it worked for about ten minutes then out it went. No power to the rear of the radio but power at the block. Replaced the red power wire from the radio harness to the that connector block and soldered the wires together. Problem solved no further issues.

Do you have a picture of what connector that is? I'm having same issue with intermittent power to the radio in my 2014. I've been trying to trace the wires and was about to resort to cutting open wire harness to trace wire.

Sorry I do not. It is the RED wire located in the bottom right hand corner of the harness as you face it looking at it from the front toward the firewall just behind the parking brake pedal/area. Just find it and try to jiggle it around, pushing and pulling slightly in it and see if your radio fires up. If so that the problem. You can pull the wire out of the harness and just do a continuity test but the problem as I have read seems to be the pin connectors themselves. So, tech hard wired the head unit and by passed that connector.
