I was driving on the highway and the check engine light came on, along with the message" SERVICE DEF SYSTEM, SEE DEALER, 5MPH LIMP MODE IN 150 MILES" I took the truck to the dealer and they quoted $2900 to replace the pump and control module. But the best news...... the DEF pump is NOT available AT ALL. Replacement pumps are on an "Engineering Hold" until they figure how to make them so they do not have so many failures. So, even after they figure out HOW to make them better, then they need to actually make them. Projected availability is APRIL 2021!

I talked to the diesel tech at the dealership and he said they have multiple trucks sitting in the back, unusable until the part becomes available. How insane is this situation????

I went home, jumped online, called every parts store and a few other RAM dealerships. I could not find a pump for sale. I started calling salvage yards and they said that as soon as a truck comes in the pumps are sold to people that have already called and are on a waiting list.

I took my truck to a friend's shop that has a professional scanner and asked if he could read the code. 6 codes actually came up relating to the DEF SYSTEM! He cleared the codes and we started the truck. Then only one code came up:
P208A for Reductant pump "A" control circuit open.

I finally got lucky and found a NEW IN THE BOX pump online, I watched a HOW-TO vid on Youtube, replaced it myself (very easy) and the truck is back on the road. Once the DEF SYSTEM was working correctly, the LIMP MODE message and CEL went away without going to the dealer to clear them. No problems so far!!

Anyway, if you have this same issue, there is a new pump listed on Ebay. Hopefully you get lucky enough to be the one who gets it.

I haven't seen anything where there have been lots if failures, not that many reported in the forums.

And, not at all surprising that the dealer couldn't find any, they only try their single supplier.

Good that you got it running, hope that was actually your problem.

Mine (2019 RAM 3500) is still under warrantee but has been sitting at the dealership for 2 weeks with no ETA on the DEF pump. About snowed in here in Fairbanks and this is my plow truck. Chrysler service department says they can reset the counter to give me 200 miles but even though this is a warrantee issue they would charge $180 for the reset. Since its their inability to support their warrantee the $180 charge seems unacceptable. Way bad service if you ask me.

FCA won't reimburse the dealer for resetting the counter, that is why they are charging you for the labor cost, although that is totally outrageous charge for less than 1/2 hour of labor and no parts involved.

As to the pump, have you tried searching for one on your own?
I know you shouldn't have to, but how badly do you need the truck back in operating condition???

Never trust a dealer, search online for one they are out there, eBay ,and others have them keep looking they are not hard to find except at the dealer who is doing warranty work. Never trust a dealer.

I asked about providing them with one. They told me it would not be under warrantee, and may even void my warrantee. Got them to rest the counter without charge, but that would only last me 2 days if I used it for work. New ETA the dealership gave is the end of June. Wife will become unemployed next because of this (No work transportation). Anyone want to start a class action suit yet?

Replacing the DEF pump with another one from some independent source cannot void your warranty if it's a factory part!

Have you called FCA customer care yet to get them to open a case for you?

Yes, I called them last week, and continue checking with them. They still can't give me an ETA or any other help. The dealership gave me an ETA for the end of June. Totally mind blowing.

Never trust a dealer . Read your warranty. They are liars , or severely misinformed.
