Truck developed bad miss under load with check engine light.
Took it in, Stealership cleared codes and said "could not dup"
They charged me 106.00 for diagnostics (apparently only lubed parts are covered in 5/100,000 powertrain)
I picked it up after hours, and as soon as I left the lot it started acting up.
I called the next morning and told them about it, they said "it's fuel or ign"
I said "I think it's a cam or lifter" (the code was for #5 cylinder misfire). I told them I wanted them to pull the valve cover. They said 5.5 hours to pull it, and they told me that I would have to pay for that time if it came out ok.
So I brought it home and pulled the cover (40 min total off and back on)

Here's the vid of what I found !
#5 intake lobe is toast!
Tomorrow they are getting an ear full

Yeah, I had a #5 mis-fire. 58k on my 2011 RAM 1500 Laramie with a 5.7 Hemi. Hadn't done the plugs at 30k so I figured it was that or maybe a coil. Took into the dealer to get the diagnosis. If it was the plugs or a coil, I was planning to do it myself. Just wanted their diagnosis.

Nope, it was a stuck lifter that "ate into the cam". This was thankfully covered under the power train warranty. Except that they didn't include an oil change, so I had to spring for that. I guess they figured the metal that got eaten from the cam just magically disappeared. Who knows what's floating in the pan, guess I'll have to pull that myself.

Don't know if the lifter bore is still good, no mention of re-honing it in the service paperwork. And, this isn't an SB that corrects a problems so I don't know if I've got a clock ticking before this bomb blows up again. Plus, had them do the PCV also. Can you believe the part only was $78?

Not too happy at the moment. Can't wait to get the follow-up quality check call in a few days. I'm pretty much going to pour hot lava all over it.

I just bought a 2011 Ram HEMI, and the dealer had just done a new cam and lifters because the #5 lifter had become seized. This happened at 138K or so miles. I dont know if they pulled the oil pan, but oil, filter, & engine gasket kit are all on the list of parts used. There are no quantities on my list, they were all used "internal" but all I can do is hope they replaced all of the lifters and studs and not just the ones that were bad.

I have a 2011 Ram Outdoorsman with 135K on it that was giving a #5 misfire code. Changed plugs, nope...changed coil pack, nope...took it in to the dealer and they came back that a roller on the lifter had seized and wore down the lobe on the cam. (They bore scoped the engine to verify this) I'm starting to wonder if there is an issue because if you do a Google search, there is an awful lot of posts regarding either valve springs or lifter fails. Dealer wants $2800 to change the cam and lifters. I think not!! Now I'm wondering if I put a cam in from the dealer (which would be a re manufactured one) if I'm going to be looking at the same problem down the road.

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I just got hit with this very same issue on my 2011 Ram with 115k miles. #5 cyl missfire, replaced coil, plugs, and injector without resolution. Popped off the valve cover, hoping and praying for a broken valve spring, but no such luck there either. I ran the engine with the valve cover off and could easily tell the #5 intake lifter was barely moving. This just got a lot more expensive

2011 ram at dealer right now...

I took my crew cab to the dealer expecting to get a new manifold to fix the tic. After letting it set outside to get good and cold they determined that the manifold and gasket are fine but there may be a lifter problem. Under 60 k miles and my warranty expires in March. Hope Chrysler covers all the lifters and the cam if worn. What should I ask my dealer to look for?
Thanks!

I notice that all of you who had this issue have 2011s. Was this originally posted in the 2011 section, or was there a possible bad run of lifters? There are quite a few guys getting up over 200,000 miles on their 2009s and the only guys with lifter issues I've seen have had 2011s.

IIRC Coolidge (member here) had a 2011 and also had a lifter take out his cam on his first Ram. Out of curiosity, what oil are you guys using since the lifters are hydraulic?

Never mind, he had a 2010 and his camshaft delaminated; question still stands.

Another commonality that I've seen is that they all seem to be happening on cylinder #5 too. I thought maybe an oiling problem. I use Castrol synthetic 5w20.
I had been noticing a decrease in performance and mpg's over the last couple months on mine. Then one day I got on it pretty hard and that is when it really started showing problems and throwing codes. I've been driving it the past week, and as long as I keep it under 3k rpm I have no issues.

I got two bids of $3890 and $3350 to replace the cam and all of the lifters, so I'm probably going to go ahead and get it fixed this next week. Just trying to figure out if I can go ahead and step up to a 6.4 cam or not. I HATE spending that much money without upgrading it in the process.

Got my Ram back today. Dealer determined that the lifter needed to be Purged. It was a bulletin that they found indicating the tick was noticeable after sitting for a few days. They said the noise went away after they got the "air out from under the lifter". Not sure how they actually did that. I discussed my concern that my warranty is up in one month and if issues arise when expired I won't be pleased. They said the hemi does make those noises and they are normal. We both agreed that normal isn't comforting. Saw an AEV Rubicon just arrived. Makes me think hard...

I have been reading this forum for a while to get info but never really had much to add until now. I have a 2010 ram 2500 5.7 with 111k. Just diagnosed with the same issue except mine was #8. I could just put ditto marks on each post and change the cylinder #. Cylinder misfire, changed plugs, pulled valve cover and noticed play in #8 exhaust rocker. Turned engine by hand and had very little movement on push rod.
My engine is already pulled and on the stand with only the heads off. Roller on lifter locked up and cam is as you would expect. I'm scared of all the metal in the engine so contemplating tear down and complete rebuild or repair flush and hope for the best. I've heard of repair and flush working in dealer repairs and in fleet service. I've also heard of total destruction from the same procedure from new cam installs gone wrong. Haven't decided what to do yet.

I just had this same issue happen to my 09 with 75000 on it. First started ticking for about a week then misfire on Cyl #4. Took it in and Lifter to Cam failure.
I would like to get some numbers on how many of these there are and bring a class action lawsuit against Chrysler.
My truck is out of warranty and they refuse to cover anything, not even the labor only. $4300 fix.... This will be my last Chrysler product of any kind! This engine only had 75000 miles on it!!!! When I called Chrysler to speak to customer service they told me that my truck had the original engine replaced 4 months after new. They didn't tell why, but wouldn't doubt if this was the issue then too. What a poor company.... they know they have defective parts or designs and they will not stand behind their products. This should be a recall!!!

If you have had this issue with your 5.7 hemi, chime in!

So, I just got mine back today from Inertia. That cam was FUBAR'd.

Ended up having them put in a Crazy Jay Eagle Plus cam, they replaced all the lifters, and disabled the MDS. In the end this ran me about $3800. So about $500 less than the dealer wanted for just putting in stock parts. It still hurts but worth it in my opinion.

New to the forums just found all this info after reading for days trying to figure out the issues with my 11 ram 1500 5.7 seems as if I was suckered into the same problem misfire on #5 can't get over 3k rpms check engine light flashes then sets truck as of it goes into limp mode and or drops a cylinder. Truck has 117k miles and no warranty has anyone heard anything else about them owning up to their mistakes/lack of knowledge of their issues with these things. I haven't taken it to a shop yet to get a diagnoses but I've done the plugs coil pack injector and even did a compression check and it's giving me 165 lbs out of number 5.

Compression test won't catch it if it is the lifter because everything is closed up. Take off the valve cover and rotate the engine, you should see one of the valves on that cylinder barely open or open just a little compared to the rest
