Need help in deciding what rear axle ratio to chose when purchasing a new 2015 Ram1500 Tradesman, straight cab, 8 foot bed, 3.6L V6 24 Valve VVT Engine.

Do I chose the standard 3.21 or the optional 3.55

We will be using the truck for a pop up truck camper and we will be maxing out the payload of 1900#. We will not be towing anything. We travel highway speeds at 55 to 60 mpg (we drive slow) and we do drive in the mountains out west sometimes.

We now have a 2009 Ram 1500 with the 3.55 but it has the 4.7L V8. We want the V6 on the new truck due to pricing.

Would appreciate any advise since I am not sure why the rear axle ratio is so important.

Thanks

Based on your specs,
I suggest the base 3.21 and enjoy the extra mpg and reduced highyway rpm's.

I also suggest the limited slip. WELL worth the $$ ..

I towed a 3000# 22' 'tent camper' trailer w/ my 3.21 2wd..
plenty of power, even in the hills, but lots of shifting :)
mileage dropped from 26 to 15 though too.

Let us know how your truck handles 'max payload' ...

ps I like my Airlift bags.. yu might want a set too ;)

Thanks for the advise. We now have airlift bags on our 2009 Dodge and they are great, keeps our truck level while the truck camper is on it.
