I just bought a Black Express 4x4 and want to add a remote start. The dealer wants 488$ but I have not been impressed with the range on my other factory remote starts. Can anyone suggest an aftermarket system that I wouldnt need a keyfob for the remote start and the big factory key? I would also like one I can use my smartphone to start my truck. Price is also a factor.

I was quoted $380 for a factory setup on my 14, but the range is stated as only 300' iirc. I had a simple Viper system on my 05 Durango and it was just okay and cost $300. We installed a Compustar on my wifes 05 Grand Cherokee with extended range (3000') and that is a great system- two way, and she can start it from 500 feet away while it's parked in a concrete parking garage. Compustar has Drone mobile available to make it work with your smartphone. I don't know what's available for the '14s as I haven't checked with a retailer yet, and I didn't see a spot on their website to see what works in each vehicle.

I had a viper remote start on my GMC and it was decent for the most part, range was ok, sometimes the lock/unlock wouldn't work right. I had the factory remote start put on my RAM and haven't had a problem with it and the range is a lot better than the viper, IMO.
I can't remember if you just have to pay for the extra part to have the viper smartphone option or if there is a monthly service fee. All I can remember when I was looking at it is the viper model I had was one model below what was required for the smartphone option.

I know the factory one installed came in at a high price. But to let you know the 2014 come with a signal range booster. I havent yet been far enough away to not make it work. I have demoed from some pretty far distances just trying to find its threshold.
I like the one remote as well plus it gives you 4 working key fobs even if only two are with remote start all four fobs will do power door and start with fob.

Needless to say I like my factory remote start.

It wont start if any doors are open, check engine light is on or if your too low on fuel. and has a built in off timer.

The range on my factory remote start is inconsistent... The advertised range is 300' I believe, and I don't get near that.

Sometimes I have to be within 20' sometimes it works from 200 from my hangar at work to the parking lot... there are times when I'm outside walking to the truck and the remote start does nothing. If i hit the lock butting to sort of "wake it up" then the remote start tends to work... its weird and I have mentioned it to the dealer and they say theres nothing wrong. Of course it works perfectly for them every time...

i had the factory remote start installed on my 14, works awesome. havent tried it from a great distance yet, but it does start the truck from inside of my cave at work...middle of the building, no windows, concrete block exterior and interior walls.

When I looked into it last winter, it required the module and a monthly service fee;I decided I didn't mind an extra key fob so much after that.

the factory remote start range is infinite -- I use my iPhone to start my truck all the time, from anywhere in the world -- if you wanted to. the UConnect app seems to work fairly well for remote start and stop, lock and unlock and sounding the horn.

I got the Drone Mobile for my 2014 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel.

I opted not to get the factory command start. This aftermerket unit can use the factory remote to start the truck (just hit Lock 3 times quickly). And of course I can use my iPhone to start it too. Also GPS tracking truck is a nice feature.

This was a feature in the kit to improve the total range to like around 300ft.
From what I was told the keyfob remote door lock and unlock range isn't as far as it is now with the added start feature.
This is the kit description. Says of long range antenna.

....just wondering, why do you need one that will start your truck a half a mile away? i can understand a couple of hundred feet maybe, from the office to the lot to warm or cool the car but beyond that i miss the point.

Because "added Range" was mentioned in the list of whats to gain from a factory installed system this has turned into a thread of range was the only reason for a factory installed system.

Guys lighten up, get what you want! Who cares. Opinions were asked for and I gave mine. i never said you should go this way because at the end of the day when all else fails you still have the longest range!

It was just a feature that is mentioned by Ram as a selling point to there Factory style starter.

This may sound weird....but I get extended range from my FOB if I put it under my chin. Tested and proven on several vehicles. Just walk out of range so the FOB stops working and then put it up under your chin and give it a shot. Seems to add 10-20 percent more range for me.

Ive done this a few times too, pretty cool

Has something to do with the brain amplifying radio waves or something.. Can't imagine its too good for your head though to do it all the time, lol
