They unscrew in a few minutes. Easy way to work around the engine bay!

That would be bad, yes. They keep road debris out of the engine compartment.

oops sorry wrong topic

on many old vehicles, i would cut out a section of the inner fender to give me access to the spark plugs, i would pull off the tire & wheel, unscrew the modified access panel, & i could change all the spark plugs without any difficulty.
i would never leave an open access between the wheels & engine
