I need to replace the Instrument Cluster in my Truck. '99 1500 4x4 SLT Laramie

It looks like I can get one off ebay for ~$80.

Do I need to do anything other than swap the units? I know that the mileage is stored in the cluster and that my mileage will read wrong unless I pay the dealer to reprogram the cluster. I'm fine with the mileage reading wrong.

Is there any other reason I can't install the new unit myself?

Nope, not that I know of. I've had to do it a few times with Chryslers and Rams.

Other than the mileage, that's the only concern.

I find it hard to believe that the mileage would be stored in something as easy to change as the cluster. It may be stored in the BCM, or PCM. The cluster is a display with no processor. A replaced cluster should display correct mileage.

Nope its stored in the cluster... There is a ROM board in the cluster that stores the information.

So you are saying that lowering the mileage on a vehicle is as easy as changing the cluster on a digital odometer? I find that hard to believe, just too easy.

yes, that's all there is too it. I know first hand since I had to replace my instrument cluster.
