I am needing to replace the fuel pump on my 2002 Ram 1500 quad cab short box. It looks like it may be easier to lift the bed than remove the fuel tank to access the fuel pump. Anyone have thoughts on this. If lifting the bed how many and where are the bolts attaching to the frame?

Lifting the bed isn't terribly difficult but you have to be careful not to hit the bumper when you tilt the bed up. It's a good idea to put some towels or cardboard between the two. It's been a long time since I've done one but I believe there are 4 bed bolts, a ground strap and the the fuel filler tube to be disconnected.

Personally I would drop the fuel tank. if the tank is full of gas I would syphon the gas out into another tank so it is empty and then drop it. I have lifted a bed off of a silverado once and believe me it will take about 5 guys to get the job done. you also take the risk of scratching up the tail gate when removing it and scuffing things up real bad. To be honest with you I would just take the truck to a mechanic to have them do the job.

Hey I had an idea. If you do pull the bed off please grab pictures and do a wright up on how it is done step for step and what tools you need. plz. that way guys in teh future could do it.

I know this i an older thread But I had to do this. I figured I'd post so it's on here. I removed my tailgate. (why not? It's easy enough.) And my rear bumper. I removed 6 bolts holding the bed to the frame. Removed the screws holding the filler neck to the bed. And removed the ground strap. (on the front passenger side of the bed connected to the cab.) Me and 2 or 3 other guys slid the bed back just enough and put a couple blocks of wood under the bed on the frame to keep the bed off of the rotors. If you do it, you'll see what I mean. The just do the reverse to put it back together. Not too difficult. Easier than dropping the tank In my opinion. Especially of it's full. I took some pictures during the whole thing.








I broke ONLY 1 bolt holding the bumper on. Easy enough to replace. Other than that. Zero damage to anything.
