Hey all,
I just changed my oil at 5,000 miles and used RP 5w-20 with the RP filter. I am constantly getting "low oil pressure" message when I first start the truck for a few seconds and occasionally I also hear a metal clattering when first starting for a second or two as well. I'm thinking of getting this stuff out of there and putting Mobil 1 in. Has anyone else run RP and had these issues? Ive used it in my previous race cars without issue but I don't feel confident with hearing the metal on metal and low oil pressure message!

Just pull the oil filter & switch to a compatible MOPAR, WIX, NAPA GOLD, or Carquest oil filter

it won't be the oil, but may possibly a bad oil filter that is some how causing a restriction ?

Ignore the d-bags. I used the same filter along with Valvoline full synthetic 5w20. I haven't had any issues at all with my setup and the RP filter has gotten great reviews. Are you sure there's enough oil in it?

To the "n s i s" guy... Don't be a dick.

Drop the Royal Purple and put in Penzoil Platinum with a Wix Filter. If it solves your problem stick with it. If it doesn't solve your problem time to visit the dealer.

The clattering is known as the "hemi tick" and is very common in the Rams. I watched my dealer start several brand new Rams on the lot looking for one with enough gas for me to test drive. Every single one did it. Mine did it occasionally after I brought it home. I switched to Penzoil Platinum and a Wix filter at about 700 miles and it does it much less often now. It'll still do it if the truck sits for several days but generally on a daily basis it won't do it.

It's probably some combination of a collapsed lifter due to oil drain back and/or piston slap due to the short skirted pistons modern v8s are using. It's the nature of the hemi.

Now the low oil pressure light it was concerns me. So if you weren't seeing that before the RP then that's my bigger concern. So spending another 30 bucks on Penzoil and a Wix is just is just cheap insurance.

Mobil 1 doesn't meet (or at least it didn't previously) Chrysler's standards for oil. More than likely it's just an administrative thing where Mobil 1 hasn't passed some certification Chrysler requires yet because of the cost&/time to get that cert. But why risk your warranty over it? Penzoil Platinum is a fantastic oil and is the best bet since myself and others have had good luck with reducing the hemi tick with it.

The cheapest place I found Penzoil Platinum is walmart in the 5 quart jugs. Of course you''ll need a couple quarts as well to get to 7 total. I get my wix filters at my local auto parts store.

There is some confusion over filters since the Ram went to the electric power steering. The '14s with electric power steering use a different filter. So when you get your wix they will probably have two filters listed for the '14 Ram. You need the smaller of the two. If you search my posts I posted the part number a couple weeks ago.

Thanks for the replies all! To the NSIS guy: Of course I know what metal on metal means, the purpose of the post was to get feedback from other experienced RAM owners to see if they have had issues with this oil, not to identify if it was normal or not.

It does have the required 7qts, I was thinking maybe a bad ADBV on the filter. Just odd as I've run this oil in many high performance engines and was floored when I heard it, never had issues with RP in the past and can tell you first hand it normally provides outstanding antiwear protection at least from what ive seen during engine tear downs.

I've used Mobil 1 one since day one, that was 60,000 miles ago. I think the fact they they don't offer the specific wt. that the SRT cars require is the lack of recommendation by Chrysler for Mobil 1. I've had good luck with MOPAR, Motorcraft and WIX oil filters. Change the filter first, their cheap and see if the noise goes away.

Mobil doesn't pay manufacturers for their certification. As long as the oil meets the API rating, I would use it.

To the OP and everyone else;

I apologize for my smart A$$ comment.

Was having a bad night and was being a childish punk. That's really out of character for me.

Hope you find the problem and its just a simple fix.

Leave the RP combo in

The hemi-tick and identical valve tick with other engines that have very hard valve metallurgy will "tick" for a moment (harmless) at start up as the oil pressurizes. Don't redline the engine at start up!!
The likelihood of a defective filter is infintesimal. Why remove one of the best oil & filter products?
If you do (as further posts indicates) SAVE the oil and put it in something else.

If you have a low oil light coming up on startup but the dipstick level is correct,, i would have the dealer look at it. As for RP, Its a great oil and I would have no probs putting it in my truck if it wasn't so damm expensive! :)

Happens to everyone. I sometimes post stuff and later think I could have said it nicer. It takes a big person to own up to it especially on the interwebz.

VOL: No prob. we all have off days

I changed the filter to a WIX today, so far so good. I understand a tick perhaps at startup but to me this sounded like piston slap and would happen somedays but not others. With RP oil pressure rose quickly on start up (58 psi cold) and then would idle around 40psi warm with appropriate increase under acceleration. Hopefully just some anomaly with a filter cant imagine its the oil and really hope not a bigger issue with the truck.
