So my 2011 ram seems to have a slight issue when driving around 100-120km per hour where there is a slight higher pitched growling that can be felt in the floor. The dealer has done 3 different flashes to the transmission and still has not fixed it. They are insisting on changing the torque converter, but after asking them if they had this issue before they have said no. Should I go along with it or are there any other signs to look for before. The truck is only 5 months old and has 8500km or 5281 miles. Are any of the following things something I should be looking at or would they be irrelevant. Thanks for the help.
Some things to do:
- Check transmission fluid= (smell – no burnt smell, level, normal color)
- Check drive shaft for the counterweights =(are there any???)
- Check wheels for counterweight missing =( all are on)
- Any vibration in the steering wheel? =( no vibration)
- Transmission temp okay =(temps is normal)
- Drive in back and listen for growl ( sounds like coming from under rear back seats)

I can live with the sound if for some reason a new torque converter is going to cause me grief but it does get annoying on my 4 hour drive to camp. Also it seems that if you hit the gas a little bit harder when you hear the sound it goes away but when u ease off again it returns.

Thanks,
Brandon

Thankfully mine does not have it but this is a very common and known issue. Get the new TC installed and don't look back. When I get home later I can dig up a few threads for you if you want to read up on the issue.

Thats ok I think I have seen it on a couple of threads when I searched it, I appreciate the offer. My main worry is something else going wrong when the stealership installs the new one and the whole transmission self destructing. Does anyone know if it is just the torque converter or is it the pump as well.
Thanks,
Brandon

Just the TC is the issue. You do have a full warranty so if something else is at fault it will be covered.

+1 on getting a new TC. I had mine replaced at 1500 miles. The noise wasnt even that bad, i could rarely ever heard it over my radio. But it wasnt unitl i had it replaced that i realized how quiet my truck was supposed to be. I wouldnt worry too much about the tranny falling apart after the TC is replaced, especially if you have warranty. It really depends on how much trust you have in your dealership to do quality work.
