I brought my Ram to the dealer this week for a state inspection and it was flagged for a very slight leak from the steering rack and pinion. It is leaking out of the big plug under what I assume is the pinion. It is the lowest bolt under the rack and pinion unit. My fluid level is fine and I have never noticed a puddle.

The dealer wanted to replace the unit at a tune of 1.2k!?!?! My unknowledgeable brain tells me to do one of two things. Either just tighten the bolt/plug (I see a good amount of threads showing) and wipe up the grunge off. Or to pull the plug, drain the unit, replace an o-ring or some such seal under it, replace the fluid, wipe everything up.

Does anyone have a suggestion? I could just clean everything up and tell them I had my mechanic fix it.

Thanks for the help,

Clean it off with brake cleaner and see if/where it starts leaking fresh fluid from. Once you pin point that, make your repairs. $1200 is steep for a job you can knock out in your garage in a few hours.
