About a week ago, I was on my way home from work and my transmission decided that 4th gear was the best gear and wouldn't use any others.

Ok, not great, but still driving and good enough to get home. Then I started searching for this issue and learned that it was common. Stuck in 4th is "Limp Home" mode. Also that the solenoid inside the trans pan was probably the issue.

My 5 year 100,000 mile warranty just ran out last year... So I decided to take it to a local transmission specialist that was recommended by my regular mechanic. They checked it out and said the transmission is fine, but that there is a voltage problem that's causing the limp home mode.

I'll also say that it's not constantly in limp home mode. When I drove it from my house to the transmission place it was fine for about 4 miles. When I drove it home from there, it was fine the whole way (about 5 miles).

Has anyone had a similar "Non-transmission" issue? Are there things I can check myself before going to the dealer? Really not excited about handing it over to the dealer...

Thanks,
Doug

Its an electronically controlled transmission, your transmission issue is an electrical issue. The transmission may be ok mechanically, but only being able to use 1 of your 6 gears defeats the purpose of having a transmission. I'm curious as to how/why this transmission specialist was unable or unwilling to help

Do you have the 8 speed with the rotary shift knob or 6 speed with column shifter ??

Usually you will have a diagnostic trouble code when the transmission goes into limp mode
Most times the trouble code will be P0750

https://www.obd-codes.com/p0750
that will explain everything, symptoms, causes, fixes

If everything is good inside of the transmission, including the solenoid, then it is likely a wiring, ( pigtail ) issue

I had this happen. It's a solinoid. They have to drop the pan to get to it. Not cheap but you;ll get your trans serviced as well.

Express wasn't available with the 8 speed until 2014

I stopped at AutoZone for a scan and they said it was P0750.
Their diagnostic pointed to the main solenoid.

Yes, it is the 6 speed with the shifter on the column.

Not sure what the transmission shop did. They didn't charge me anything, so maybe they just didn't want to get into an electrical problem.

Mechanically it's fine because after restarting it (sometimes) it will run fine for a couple of miles.

I'm in NY and would give this solenoid replacement a shot myself it was 20 or 30 degrees warmer. Looks like I'm off to the dealer.

Assuming it is the solenoid, what should I expect to pay? Parts, labor, trans fluid... Since they are in there, is there anything else I should have them do?

Thanks,
Doug

May as well change the filters since they'll be replacing the fluid that comes out when they drop the pan

Sure does add up quickly. I don't have the details, but between the solenoid/valvebody part, fluid, gasket, and filters, it's about $600 in parts and another$450 in labor before tax.

Off brand solenoid/valve body was between $200-$250, I suppose the official Ram part is about double that. I assume there is some kind of warranty on the Ram part... I'll ask the dealer when I get my truck back.

From what I hear, the solenoid is very likely the problem. I hope so. Would hate to spend that $$$ and be stuck in 4th gear a month from now.

I'll keep ya posted and share details later.

Well, not much more to share. Drove home from the dealer last night and to work today and everything seems fine. The costs stated above were pretty accurate. The solenoid was about $450.
They also did serviced two recall notices, so I'm current there... and when I bought the truck from the dealer they included lifetime oil changes, so they took care of that too.

All in all not bad... Vision Dodge has been really good to my family over the years.

I have an 08 3500 dually with 250k miles. About 2 months ago it started deciding not to up shift out of 4th, but down shifts fine. Shutting the truck off and restarting does not fix it. A friend of mine said to disconnect the battery cables and let it set for 5 minutes and then reconnect. This does the trick for awhile. I haven’t been able to get a diagnostic on it because it straightens up before I get somewhere to have a test ran. Since disconnecting the battery cables work, I’m guessing it is an electrical issue???
