Ever since Ive bought this truck I've had several issues. Now the last thing left (besides the ridiculous amount of rear end backlash) is some noise, that after I've done a long process of elimination, seems to be coming from the transfer case. The dealer has no idea but says it's not from the TC because he took the front driveshaft out and drove and the noise is still there. That didn't make since to me because I believe the "stuff" in there is still moving/spinning as long as the front wheels are spinning. The noise is definitely a revolution type sound almost like a ujoint but not chirping and is NOT a ujoint. Replaced both front wheel bearings and still no fix. Both drive axle joints are perfect. I'm at a loss so any input would be greatly appreciated. I take very good care of my trucks because I need them for work to make money. My mechanic says I should just put some big MT's on and the sound will go away lol

2012 2500 5.7. Can't post a video because you wouldn't be able to hear it. No it's not a grinding noise, more like a fluttering sound. Don't feel it in neither steering or gas pedal and it has a whopping 38000 miles! I had a 06 ctd and had the typical issues of ujoints, track bar, ball joints and wheel bearings. This is none of the above

Also, you can only hear it when the windows are up. I try to hear it with windows down but the outside noises drown it out. The noise matches the speed (like a flat spot on a tire), the faster you go the more it sounds like one solid tone

IF it is the same noise I am thinking about, from what I understand, all gas 2500s make it. There has been a big topic of discussion on some Power Wagon forums about a noise. The only reason I think it is different is you can most def. hear my/our noise with the windows down. If you only hear it with them up, might be a different noise. You can really hear my noise when under an underpass or next to a highway dividing wall.
Probably not the exact answer you were looking for, but at least I hope I got you thinking about another option. Some think it is exhaust related.
Not too long ago, someone passed me in a newer ram 2500 hemi (projector headlights) and I heard the same noise I have.
Good luck

Hey thanks for the response. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like the same noise. Mine goes into the dealer on Monday and everybody who has looked at it agrees it's definitely in the front differential. It's either in the transfer case or front pig. The part that sucks the most is, I had to pay for a new wheel bearing to prove that WASN'T the problem. Now it's GUARANTEED to be in the driveline which falls under the 100,000 mile power train. I am curious about your noise because I can't find any "common" noise on these 2500's. Maybe I'll fish around some more on this subject!!!

Well the dealer tore apart the entire front end and replaced the pinion bearing and some parts! Unfortunately nothing is solved. Now we're REALLY stumped. Have no idea what to do at this point except drive it until it breaks. Just hate driving this thing around making this annoying noise

Has anyone ever figured this sound out?
For over a year I have poured over everything on the internet and heard lots of ideas, but I have never seen an answer.

The sound on my 2500 only happens on acceleration, it does not make the sound when you let off the gas. At first this made me believe it was in the exhaust.

I took it to a custom exhaust shop who poured over the entire exhaust and they were at the end, completely stumped. They know for sure its not the exhaust though.

I thought maybe it was the flexplate and took it to a transmission shop. In the end, they were also stumped at the mystery sound.
They said it just seems to be a sound the engine makes.
Im not buying that because the company I work at has a fleet of 5.7 2500's and none of them make this sound.

During all of this, i suddenly developed coincidentally, the "Hemi Tick". That quickly turned into P307 misfire code which ultimately turned out to be a worn cam lobe from lifters eating them.

After the repair I was sad to hear the damn noise again.
I can only describe it as a flutter/dieseling/spinning kind of sound.

This now leads me to believe since it only is apparent at acceleration that possibly the problem may be a mount? Maybe a transmission mount is torquing the driveshaft under load and the sound is coming from a bearing?

Anyway, just curious if anyone has ever solved this.

Easy Fix..............

Just keep cranking your radio up.

I had a new 1970 Chevelle that had a squeak in it that about drove me nuts. After a lot of agonizing nights a mechanic at the local dealership put it on the hoist and pointed right to the problem.

It was a "heat riser" that would open up as the exhaust warmed up. It had a spring in it that would activate and open the exhaust (single exhaust). You could spray it with WD-40 or some lubricant but the squeak would always come back. They replaced the heat riser and it cured the problem.

With all you have gone through, it would be sitting on the car lot. I know money doesn't grow on trees, but I would find a way to dump that headache.........
