I recently traded in a 2016 RCSB 3.6 3.21 gear for a 2018 quad cab 3.6 with 3.55 gears. While driving my 2016 i used to see trans temps in the mid 180's with 285/70/17 yokohama at's and up near 200 when towing my 21ft camper. My 2018 with the factory goodyears 265/70/17 i get trans temps between 190 and 200 empty and towing i see around 205 to 228. this is towing at about 55mph .
Is that temp safe for the transmission?

228F sounds a bit high. Perhaps install a larger trans cooler? At least drop pan and replace fluid more often. You could also send a sample to Blackstone Labs, to monitor fluid health. Modern synthetic lubes are very heat tolerant. I believe there are now aftermarket finned aluminum trans pans available for the 8 speed that would help. Try PPE and MagHytec.

The 8 speeds are designed to run from 176-196 Fahrenheit; mine has never been above 196 in my Ram, even towing 4400 lbs up a 7% grade at 85 MPH for a few miles.

The 845RFE behind the 3.6 in my Durango sits at about 197 and will get to 199 on the highway when passing-I don't tow with it.

It sounds like your trans thermostat on the P/S side of the trans body needs replaced. These transmissions are pretty bulletproof, but from time to time we will hear of one overheating like yours, and that's usually the culprit

I've consistently seen trans temps between 190-200 over 20K miles towing ~4000lb travel trailer, often times in outside temps at or above 100. Normal cruising speed when towing is 62. Empty it's actually not much less than that - maybe in mid to upper 180's to 190. Much over 200 should probably be looked into as that is a good bit higher than I've seen from my 8-speed when working hard.

My coolant temps are generally in the 200-220 range towing and oil temps range from about 225 - 250. On longer 6-7% grades I have seen oil temp hit 260 but never exceed that and it does comes down fairly quickly once the hill is crested.

I follow the severe maintenance schedule in owner's manual given the amount of towing I do and have only run full synthetic Pennzoil per RAM's recommendation.

There is another guy on another board that had high temps from day one of his 14 ED. He was always up in the upper 250's lower 260's and FCA told him it was normal. He tried changing out the 3 way valve which did nothing and finally changed out a cooling block on the trans and now tows almost 8k at the 190's to 200. He is now trying to get that paid for by FCA.

I'd be uncomfortable with my transmission being hotter than my oil

I just towed with my 2010 5.7 hemi for the first time. #6000 trailer, 60-65 MPH, pretty flat terrain, 70F ambient. After an hour, the trans temp was 161F.

I've had my trans temp up to 208 while towing my 31' camper from a stop up a long incline (13,200 combined weight). The temp was for a short time then dropped back down. My oil was 251 at that time.

Trans Temps Again

ok, took my truck in for an oil service and to get the rear camera tailgate harness replaced and asked about my temps. Tech told me towing 4400lbs was alot of work for my truck and temps where normal.Again explained that they are higher than my previous truck and my unloaded temps are also higher.
So yesterday it didnt get above 55 degrees here in Florida. Driving home on surface streets speeds under 60mph my gauges read
This is an unloaded truck

Outside Temp 54
Coolant 199
Trans 194
oil 192
oil pressure 38psi

if i get to highway speeds trans is at 215

my 2016 RCSB with 3.21 gears didnt get that hot towing my camper!

Have your trans cooling block on the transmission changed out. On the other board I am on one guy used to see over 260* and had the block changed and now doesn't go over 200* with an 8k towing load.
