Hi all, hopefully there is a transmission guru or owner here who has experience an issue I very recently ran into.
The synopsis is this.
Driving from Pensacola, Fl to Virginia Beach, Va Beach, Va pulling a 12 ft. trailer and had one cycle in the bed and one in the trailer. Pulling roughly 2500 - 2600 pounds in all. Truck is running great at 1900 RPM's @ 70 MPH until.... ran into about 400 miles of THICK DENSE FOG in NC to VA. About 200 miles into the fog, the truck began to cruise at 2500-2800 RPM's @ 70 MPH, never calmed back down. Gas consumption tripled. I stopped once I made it into Va and looked under the hood, checked for leaks pretty much all over, found nothing out of the ordinary. Re-fueled and hit the road for the last 100 miles home. Same issue, RPM's were way above normal and gas was just flowing through. burned about 3/4 tank for about 100 miles. I made it to the interstate to home, and ran into some traffic, so I let off the gas, coasted pretty much to a stop, and when I went to push the gas, it revved way up to about 3500 rpm's and would barely move. I held the gas as I was surrounded by thick Va driver traffic, and once it shifted into 2nd gear, it ran fine other than the higher RPM's. I parked it at home for about 4 hours, got back in to do a delivery and it was doing the same thing. Revving high in first, and then even revving high in other gears when I would throttle up on the interstate. Burned a little over 1/4 tank for about a 40 mile round trip. Made it back home, disconnected the trailer and parked it for a day. Hopped in over the past 2 days, no issues whatsoever. Driving normal, no revving up, no overuse of fuel, as if it never happened.
So, if anyone has any idea of what could have caused this, I would love to hear opinions and any other possible ideas. I am scheduled to drive from Va to Fl and back Monday - Wednesday and I am skeptical about pulling the trailer even empty if I run the possibility of messing something up. Should I do a dry run around town over the weekend with the trailer attached to see if it happens again? Any idea of a part that may need replacing? Hopefully I explained it well enough that someone understands, but if I missed something important, please let me know.
