Hey guys, my 2013 has about 70K miles and for about the last month or 2 has been sluggish to start up.
What I mean when I say that is, on the final crank when the engine would normally fire quickly it seems like it struggles to fire and hesitates for a second but it does always start. Once it is running it is perfect and it only happens after it has sat for a while (ex: over night).
It is not the battery as it does not struggle to crank the engine and no dimming lights etc.
Its not the spark plugs because I just changed them 3 weeks ago and it was having this "problem" with both old and new plugs.
It probably isn't injectors or fuel filter because it runs perfect after it is running or if it hasn't sat for to long.
I can only imagine that the fuel is leaving the engine after it sits for to long.

One thing that i did change around the time this started happening is i began using Shell gas only. But i don't think that would be the problem.

any ideas? and if so, is this something I should address or is it not going to hurt anything?

thanks,

Christian

Try this... Next time you do a cold start (like in the morning), insert the key and turn the ignition to the "on" position. Then turn it back off. Repeat this twice. What this does, is it starts to cycle your fuel pump. So after its cycled, turn the car on like you normally would and check to see if it turns on fine, or if it still struggles. If it turns on fine, then its most likely the fuel pump starting to go out.

I replaced the plugs with the oem nkg copper plugs. But it was happening with old plugs a few weeks prior to replacement as well. I'll get the battery tested while I'm at it but I don't think that would do it bc it cranks no problem.

Is there any chance that the fuel pump is ok but the fuel is just draining back to the lines/tank the engine while sitting?
Im guessing there's some back flow preventer valve and maybe that's faulty. Wouldn't it have a rough idle if the fuel pump was going bad?

I don't think its the pump, I think it would not be running like normal if it were. Given that batteries usually last about 5 years and you live in an area that gets very cold and you probably frequently just take short trips (I assume, since you are in LI), I think it probably is the battery.

Just testing it may not indicate a loss of power, I don't think dead cells show up without a load test, but the load test may.

2013s have a returnless fuel system, there is only one fuel line between the tank and the D/S fuel rail, and then a jump line from there to the P/S fuel rail. I am not sure if the 2009-2012s are returnless or not as 2013 was the first year for the pulse width modulating fuel system

Did you try cycling the fuel pump? The car can run perfectly fine with a fuel pump thats starting to go bad. Once it goes bad completely, the car will die out of nowhere and not turn back on.

I highly doubt its the battery, but take it to get load tested at an autozone for free. And do the fuel pump cycle test i mentioned. That way we can narrow the problem instead of guessing.

Sorry for the late response i just wanted a couple of mornings doing the ignition cycling and without too repeat the results.

So I can report that cycling the key did take away the sluggish start.
BUT yesterday i got a much worse problem that I think I will start a new thread about.

I'll go more into detail there but i have the following error codes:

U0109 - LOST COMMUNICATION WITH FUEL PUMP CONTROL MODULE
P062A - FUEL PUMP "A" CONTROL CIRCUIT RANGE/PERFORMANCE
U0109 - LOST COMMUNICATION WITH FUEL PUMP CONTROL MODULE
U0140 - LOST COMMUNICATION WITH BODY CONTROL MODULE

had codes pulled at AutoZone - fuel pump communication code came up twice...not sure if that matters.
