Yes, a combination of seat sensors and as in my wife's 08' Avenger (maybe in the Ram) use a Occupant Restraint Controller to literally measure the occupants and their position in the cabin to measure the rate of inflation. This is done sonically in conjunction with the seat sensors. From what I have been reading, the 2012 ram comes with a Standard Occupant sensing airbag. so in the seat it senses if there is a passenger and turns on the passenger air bag, if no one is in the seat, the airbag will not deploy upon a collision. I would still contact customer service and confirm this, the life of a child is nothing to play with.
Standard Features Ram 1500
PASSENGER AIRBAG DEACTIVATION - OCCUPANT SENSING DEACTIVATION
They also say the following at the RAM website "Children 12 and under should always be in a back seat correctly using an infant or child restraint system, or the seat belt properly positioned, dependent on the child's age and weight."
If in doubt, call Ram to confirm, 1-866-RAMINFO.
I don't think there's a second light for the passenger but according to the manual the same light for the driver should be going off if you aren't buckled up.See my delima is quite the oppisite of this. my truck isnt telling me when im buckled up as a passenger or not so im unsure if the airbag is working on that side. i clearly exceede the weight requirement for it to notice me sitting and therefore buckled and the drivers side chimes when im driving but if im passenger, nothing...no chimes no lights or anything. is there a second light for passenger airbag? and should it be going off whence im sittin there?
