Well - it could hurt. Hurt what exactly is the question. To do it right, you'd want the prep work done to remove all scaling rust, otherwise you are spraying perfume on a pig and potentially causing more issues as the coating (depending on the type used) could trap water and salts as the loose rust underneath bubbles the coating out and cracks.

Just food thought if you are considering. Also - think about FluidFilm or CorrosionX as an alternative. You could even do that yourself to help ward off mother nature for a bit longer.

I agree with CB919.. Many do it yourself products out there.. With mine I used a wire brush to clean up any loose paint and rust then used a quality rubberized rocker guard spray from my local car parts store..

take a drive north to Canada and find the first Krown dealer. you wont be disappointed!
