Towing a trailer is so confusing with all the alphabet soup of GVWR, GAVR, etc! I have a Dodge Ram 1500 ST Quad Cab 4x2, with a 4.7L V8. The truck has a towing package. The Ram specs say I should be able to to tow a max of 7300 lbs. Many RV forums I visited say NO WAY to 5th wheels. Can somebody clear this up for me? In English:) Thanks!

It has to do with how much weight your truck can carry. Fifth-wheel type trailers are usually larger/weigh more than a comparable size tow-trailer. I have seen small fifth-wheel trailers but you lose some interior space to the goose neck, so a similar lightweight tow trailer would be a better choice. I'm no expert on this subject, but have done some research for myself.

If I remember correctly...

GVWR/GVAR is the vehicle weight rating (Gross).

As an example it the GVWR/GVAR of your vehicle is 6800 pounds.

That is the most weight the vehicle can carry without exceeding it's weight rating fully loaded.

So say the vehicle weighs 5500. 200 pounds for me and another 425 for my ex-wife, 40 lbs for her purse. 5500+200+425+40=6165. Trailer tongue weight cannot exceed the remaining 635 lbs.

If the tongue weight on the trailer is 500, you still have room for another 135 lbs, or to hide your new girlfriend and her luggage.

(I didn't add fuel weight because that really isn't that important in the example)

The problem with towing a 5th whelk with a 1/2 ton is the pin weight of the 5th wheel is 20% of the 5th wheel which will typically equal or exceed a half ton payload. There are however small 5th wheels that are towable by half ton's, Escape made in Canada & Scamp are two that come to mind.

5th wheelers don't always automatically mean greater weight. Sometimes, it's a choice of having the greater maneuverability afforded by the design, though ultimately, they do extend to heavier weight classes. Still, axle count can nullify part of the tongue weight. A few years ago my dad and I built a 4 axle trailer. Alone it was heavy. Add an 11,000lb boat and it was quite a load, but while it was a gooseneck design, the actual pin weight was surprisingly mild.
