I finally got an appointment with my dealer to let them try and solve this intermittent problem. The EVIC display showed Service Antilock Braking System and alternated to Service Electronic Brake System. It would constantly bing and display the ABS light and the Traction Control light. I made an appointment with our local Ram dealer for 7am and when I dropped it off gave them the following “Love Note”.

2017 Ram Display Brake Error = Service Electronic Braking System and Service Antilock Braking System

See the 3 minute video at

I also showed the service rep the vid on my phone.

The video was made on I-45 just north of the Woodlands, Texas.

It seems to happen more often on rough road but had the error on smooth part of highway.

When it happens, the Cruise Control shuts down and the truck icon in the Navigation stops moving on the map.

When they called me to pick the truck up, below was on the print out……

Cause: has code c0020-01, hcu is short to ground on motor and took out abs module

Replaced: 68437098AB Module Anti Lock Brake System

Replaced: 68143491AA Control Anti Lock Brake System

Replaced hcu and abs module, test drove and everything is working properly

They also noted that they did the Recall V44 Tailgate Latch

When I drove the 3500 home the 20+ miles (4 miles on rough road), the problem did not reoccur.I guess we'll see.....

After a few days, it all seems well. I'll have to say that I've never had a bad experience at any dealer and this one was very well handled.

I just ran across this post. My truck is doing the EXACT SAME THING. Intermittent ping and EBS / ABS Service lights. Taking to dealership tomorrow. 2018 Ram 2500 with 13K miles.

Has your problem been resolved since your original post?

Thanks!
Hi @Camlocker75 - If you decide to address this with your dealer, please let us know via private message. We would be more than happy to provide you with an additional layer of assistance for that process.

I just had the same issue on a trip to Lead, SD... All the same warnings, even a fuel system warning and my fuel gauge would quit working. I called 2 dealerships who offered no assistance and couldn't see me for 10 days. So I found this thread and read through it. I knew I had a front wheel bearing starting to make a little noise, so after reading a couple posts regarding ABS and wheel speed sensors, I concluded it was logical it could be the wheel speed sensor brought on by the bearing failing. We changed the wheel bearing/hub and that fixed it. I would take a good look at anything wheel speed sensor and make sure that is all good before jumping to the major components. Thanks for all your posts, you saved me at least $1000 and a lot of grief!

Has anyone replaced these parts on their own? My 2017 3500 is just barely outside of warranty so they won’t cover it. The dealership wanted over $800 to fix it, but I could get the parts for around $300.

I got everything installed, but now it’s saying service ABS, rear air suspension, trailer brake system, and electronic brake system. It also shows no speed on the speedometer. Does it need to be flashed of something?

My ram 2018 is doing the same thing. Dealer wants$200 to do diagnostic and then close to $1000.00 to fix. My truck is out of warranty . If this is a known issue that has happened to soo many vehicles. Why are they not recalling this or fixing it for free? This is one of many issues Ive fixed on the 2018 2500 diesel. This is my first & last Ram... soo disappointed in Dodge.

I had the same issue 15 months ago on my 2017 2500. The on/off sound get's quite annoying. I removed the fuse and took it in to get repaired. Dealer replaced hcu and abs module. Here I am 15 months later and THE_SAME_ISSUE started up again this week!! By reading other forums seems this is a common issue. I wonder if there's a class action about this. Has anyone replaced this themselves?

Just too update - the dealership let me know they were replacing the ABS module, it was there for 3 weeks. Kept getting the runaround that they were waiting for the ABS module, only to find out all they did was replace the HCU, and the notes were opposite of what they said. Avoid Crown of Chattanooga like the plague. Misrepresentation. See what/if FCA or the dealership do.

I just started having the same error messages My 017Ram 2500 is doing the same thing... started just last week, and the problem is intermittent; I cannot duplicate it

2017 RAM 2500 with 10,002 miles. Exact same issue. You don't have to duplicate it or the ABS light to stay on, the error code is stored and can be found by run a FULL diagnostic check, not just a check engine read. I ran the diagnostic on my handy BlueDriver reader and at showed code C0020 ABS Pump Motor Control: General Electrical Failure. Took it to the dealer and they replaced 68143491AA Control -Anti Lock Brakes (HCU) Should have replaced it myself, but was a little worried about the brake bleeding process through the unit - could find nothing online about the replacement to guide me. So - 23 days out of warranty I got the privilege of paying $802 to our local RAM dealer to replace. Come on RAM - its a bad solder on a circuit board or something common. This is not a wear and tear item. Should be covering this item no charge.

EXACT SAME PROBLEM/TRUCK
No matter what forum concerning this issue you go to, its the EXACT same story from Ram ! Was told by every shop in the area this was such a reoccurring issue, the dealership service dept’s are the only ones making these repairs & they “only”can get the parts. I’ve reached out every possible way I could to Ram, brought to dealership and had to borrow $ to get it fixed. “Not covered under warranty”. I’ve reached out to multiple ppl about this and taking 100’s of screenshots from all the forum/social media platforms. Please feel free to reach out to me to stay updated with my course of action ‼

I have a 2014 mega cab 3500 with the same Electronic Braking System and Service Antilock Braking System problem. I am as puzzled as everyone with this code, read so much on it that you think i would be an expert by no. Well, i had a friend tell me that its a dirty ABS sensor issue. So, i took a pressure washer and cleaned around my brake calipers, and sensor, let dry overnight and road tested it the next day. Drove 43 miles to work and back with no issues, i am on my third day and still nothing. it may be dumb luck but i went from having this error codes everyday to nothing now. Guys, its worth a try!

MY sisters 2017 2500 with 35k miles is doing the same thing. ABS brakes, traction control and electric braking system are driving her crazy. Its been happening since the Spring and the Dealership has been great at trying to fix the problem. They spent the whole day trying to fix the issue and couldn't recreate it. Then she picks it up, drives out of the parking lot and it happens all over again. Now the family is traveling 4 hours from home and the chiming making us crazy. I took a video of it. This is insane! Not what you would except from new Dodge ...very frustrating!

My 2017 ram 2500 mega cab started doing this today. 17,800 miles and 3 days out of warranty. Have an appointment to bring to dealer next Friday. They’re not sure if Ram will cover it or not. ☹
mine just started the same thing. About how much did the dealer charge?
Hi @Tombstone & @Grozier1 - Please do not hesitate to send us a private message, as we would be more than willing to escalate a case on your behalf for further support as you address this with your dealer!

Chime finally went off all the lights are still on and no cruise control heading home from MI 5 hours of driving 🙃. Hopefully someone from Ram will contact me to get my sister's info. This has been frustrating enough to make a person rethink a purchase from Dodge!
Hi @HollyD - I am very sorry to hear of your sister's situation. Please know that you can submit her info here so that she receives an email follow up: Email Ram. Our care teams are also available via phone at 866-726-4636 as well.

The problem I was experiencing (per my previous post in this thread) appears to have gone away since I replaced both OEM batteries; that was an entirely different problem. Maybe the hour or so with no batteries connected caused the erasure of whatever was causing the erroro messages to intermittently appear. Replaced the batteries and completed a ~250-mile trip (all but ~10 miles towing the camper) over the past weekend and a 100-mile trip withoput towing, and the error messages have not appeared. While I doubt the problem was caused by something replated to a failing battery (or batteries), could this be a remote possibility? I will keep watching for the return of the problem and will connect the code scanner if it does happen.

I too have had the same issue, the dealer diaged but I pulled the truck due to high rental charges. Ram care approved the repair on them with a co pay but now I have moved and the new dealer wants to diag it again. The cost of the diag and co pay is more than the abs unit its self plus more rental charges. I am going to replace it my self, any way I can get some money back on this? It looks to be some thing bad in the abs recirc motor, which should not be happening at 50k miles. I took the motor off and it looked new inside. I have never had any abs issues with my other vehicles even at 200k. On the BMW fourms people are having similar issues with continental units which is what this is. So this is something that continental and ram have to work out. There should be a recall for this. I love my truck but am wondering whats gonna give me trouble next.

You can message me with details of your issue if you’d like. I’m logging/recording as many cases as possible. They (RAM) chooses to be naive of their customers problems & act like they care. A simple google with this ongoing problem will result in (literally) 100’s of posts on internet (web, YouTube, forums)(& that’s just those that are willing to express their issues).

Update: My Ram is now at the dealership awaiting the arrival tomorrow of a replacement hydraulic module. After they read the (what seemed like a bazillion) error codes and their tech played with it for a bit today, the problem was narrowed down to that particular part. I expect it will be fixed and back with me by Thursday at the latest.

The dealership peepz have been (as usual) fantastic to work with... prompt and skilled all the way. :)

I will try to remember to post up the results later on.

I wondered about something similar to this, but the same problem on mine came and went afterward. Weather and road conditions(clear or lousy) at first seemed to affect it, but then it didn't matter. The problem symptoms were irregularly irregular. I even considered that the batteries are acting a bit goofy and replaced them, but that was not causing my ABS problems.

Have the dealer read the codes (leave it running when you arrive there) so they can come out, hook up their "box" and read the error codes. Mine showed what appeared to be a bazillion of them. I will bet there will be at least a page or two when printed out.

Another Update: The repair is finished, they did an excellent job, and now the truck is back home where it belongs. :)

Also, based upon the paperwork I saw, it appears that FCA is on top of this problem. Parts are available for necessary repairs, and as long as the dealership is diagnosing correctly, things get fixed correctly and rather quickly. Of course, much depends upon the dealership doing the work.

Another Update: As of today (10/14/2020), and after a 400-mile trip (towing the camper) it remains good. Without intending to jinx it, I will say it's all good.
:)

Yet another update... one that could jinx me and my truck: As of today (7/1/2021), all remains good and no problems to report. :)

I just joined the site so I could add another truck to the list of failures. My Ram, '17 2500 6.7 Megacab Longhorn w/77k miles, has been flashing that dang "Service ABS" and "Service Electronic Breaking" warnings too. Plugged in my scanner and I get the same code (C0020) as everyone else.

If "ramcares" actually cared then this would have been addressed by a recall notice. Look how many people have had this issue in just the past 2 months, its insane.
