I bought my new Ram a few weeks ago. It didn't have remote start from the factory (which I wanted) but everything else was right and the dealer said they could add one which was included in my original purchase. They had to order the starter and would install it when they got it. I got a call that the starter should be in today or tomorrow so I was beginning to set up an appointment and it hit me I should verify that the starter will be covered under warranty before they mess with my electrical system. The dealer tells me it is only covered for 12 months/12,000 miles, not the 3 years/36,000 miles that the rest of the truck is. I don't think I specifically asked the question about the warranty when I bought the truck but i was sure lead to believe that there would be no difference between this remote start and if one had been installed at the factory. I emailed Mopar to ask them and they said the same thing. I look at the Mopar web site and find this:

http://www.mopar.com/assets/pdf/service_specials/mopar_parts_accessories_warranty_statement.pdf

which says:

Mopar parts replaced on a Chrysler Group LLC vehicle still covered by the Chrysler New Vehicle
Basic LimitedWarranty are warranted for the remainder of the New Vehicle Basic 3 year/36,000
Mile LimitedWarranty, or for Mopar’s Basic 12 month LimitedWarranty from the original
installation date, whichever is more favorable to the customer.

which says to me if it is installed by the dealer on a new vehicle it should be covered under the 3/36 warranty. I sent this to both the dealer and Mopar asking them why this isn't the case and haven't heard back from either.

Does anyone here know anything about this situation? I'm very happy with my new truck but this seems pretty crummy.

I negociated mine in to the deal to be added like yours by the dealer and they told me it was covered 3year/36 k miles.
Your dealer or nmine is wrong. If it is a factory installed item installed by the dealership it is coded as a factory item.

The statement you quoted said "Mopar parts replaced on a...". But your dealer is installing something new, not replacing a part installed by the factory.

You could make a case that the remote start was part of your vehicle purchase, that the part is a typical factory-installed part (not an aftermarket add-on) and should be covered by the same warranty as the rest of the truck, regardless of whether the factory or dealer installed it. From the consumer's standpoint, they are both Chrysler Group. But making the case is only the beginning if they refuse to accept that point of view. You might win in court after spending time and money. Or you might lose after spending time and money.

Their assertion that it is not covered under the basic warranty is, as you said, crummy. I would continue pressing them.

The dealer installed remote start is on my original sales agreement. I can't see how they can not cover it under the 3/36 warranty and keep a straight face.

I was looking at getting a max care 7/85 extended warranty and they are saying the remote start would be covered under the max care plan. When I emailed Mopar I didn't say anything to them about looking at a max care plan and they didn't suggest I look at one so at least the customer rep at Mopar wasn't telling me this to sell me a max care plan.

Had a similar situation.
Found the exact truck I wanted except it had the open rear end. Asked the dealer if they could install the LSD, and they said they could but even though its a Mopar part that it would only be warrantied for 12mo/12,000 instead of the 5yr/100,000.

uh...no thanks.

Update:

I wasn't getting an answer back from the dealer on why they were telling me the remote start warranty was only 12mo/12,000 miles so I called Mopar Vehicle Protection and was told that the dealer installed remote start would be covered under the original 3/36 warranty as long as it "was added to the truck's build sheet by the dealer" which I was told any dealer would know how to do. I suppose I should be able to run the on line VIN decoder to check to make sure that it gets done.
