I'm currently researching my next truck purchase. I'm trying to decide between another F-150 and a Ram 1500 or 2500. First, I don't really need a 3/4 ton truck. The only reasons I'm considering a Ram 2500 is the truck will be lifted and run larger tires (probably 2-4 inches with 35's). I feel the Ram 2500 will be easier and less expensive to lift and the heavier duty components will hold up better than a 1/2 ton truck. Plus, I'm not gonna lie, I simply love the styling of the Ram 2500 and the option of the Mega Cab is great! I do not need or want the Cummings diesel. I know it's a great engine, but my reasearch leads me to believe I'd have problems with it as a daily driver going short distances, plus the cost would blow my budget.
So, my question is this. What kind of gas milage are you owners of the 2010 thru 2012 Hemi powered Ram 2500's getting? Also, what gears do you have and what tire size are you running?

My 1500 4x4 5.7 hemi has less that 1000 miles on it and it is balancing out at about 13mpg. It's hard to stay out of the gas it sounds so nice. I was up at 18 on the hwy. It will get better as it runs more.

Hmmm, 2500, big tires, lift, ..... avg 11 maybe????

3.73 gears in a 4x4 Mega 2500 with stock tires

I'm getting about 12 in town, 17 highway and 8 towing 10K.

I only have 2000 miles on the truck though, I'm hoping it will improve. Regardless, I didn't buy a truck for fuel mileage ;)

My 2010 quad cab with 8ft bed gets between 10 and 13mpg while driving around my very rural, hilly area of PA. I'm sure it would get better mpg on the hwy. I'm running 285-70-17 tires (33").
Stock gears are 3.73 and I'm running limited slip lockers front and rear. I'd never buy another 1/2 ton truck, the 3/4 tons do everything better.

I understand. I've never purchased a vehicle based on fuel consumption. But I've never had to pay nearly $4 a gallon for fuel before. I don't expect any full size 4x4 to get great gas milage, but I can't purchase a new vehicle and find out it only gets 10 mpg on the highway either. My Jeep currently averages 15 to 16 mpg and my wife's Expedition constantly averages a little less than 15 mpg. If I can get 13 to 14 mpg out of a Hemi powered Ram 2500, I'll be completely satisfied. :smiley_thumbs_up:

13-14 will be no problem :)

If you put on bigger tires though, it will start falling off quickly...
My next set will only be 285s. I learned my lesson running 315s (equal to 35") on my last truck and what a difference they made! :(

a lift and larger tires are going to reduce the mpg a good amount, sorry my friend, you can't have improved mpg and the look you want.

I will be in the same boat next year, could use the 2500 pay load, like the fact that you get a full size cab with a full size box, but my next truck is going to get pretty big and I think big tires would murder the mpg's but I dont have use for a cummins also and like you, have read not good things about driving them only 10 miles at a time...

Fuel prices are killing us all. My last truck was a 2001 F-150 Supercrew with a lift and 35's. I averaged 13 mpg combined city/highway. Just hoping a Hemi powered Ram 2500 will get that at least. I've read some very impressive "real world" MPG averages on this site for the new Ram 1500's and this gave me hope for the 2500. But I recently learned the 2500's don't have the fuel saving technology of the 1500's where some cylinders are shut down during highway cruising. But honestly, I never noticed before that 3/4 ton trucks don't have estimated fuel milage listed on the window stickers.

I have the 2012 mega cab 2500 with 4.10 gears: have around 4500 miles on the truck now and here are my numbers: Around town I average 13 mpg; Highway no load around 15-16; pulling my 9K 5th wheel I average 9 mpg (however lotsa hills and up and down...on the nice level straights I get around 11-12 towing hwy); towing my 3k boat I got 11-12 mpg. So far no complaints as it gets better gas mileage than my 2006 F150 that was lifted that it replaced.
