Hey Guys! I've been reading threads for some time now, great advice! I'm looking to make my truck sound better, but don't have the cash for a catback. So I was going to change out the muffler, to a Magnaflow or a Flowmaster like many on the Forumz have. I want my truck to sound meaner. The stock muffler on the truck is huge, and my understanding is that the bigger the muffler, the quieter it will be. So that leads me to believe that if I use the same size from Magnaflow, I will be disappointed and will have wasted my time and $$. Can anybody give me some guidance here? Will a smaller size be bad for the truck? Will the big muffler sound better from Flowmaster? I think I've read that the Magnaflow is better on a performance standpoint, which I would prefer, but the guy I talked to at Magnaflow told me that basically on a 1-10, 5 being stock, switching to a Magnaflow in the same size would be like a 6 to 6-1/2...that's not the results I'm looking for! Help!

Yes larger volume is quieter. However, a magnaflow(or any other straight through type muffler) will be louder than oem which is chambered. Flowmasters are chambered as well, but they are much smaller so louder.

I had a 14" straight through and it was pretty loud. I switched to a 22" straight through (magnaflow) and removed the cats. It's basically the same volume as the 14" with cats. Cats swallow a lot of sound. It's a little quieter but not much. Personally I'd go with an 18" magnaflow minimum or even something larger like a 22" or 24". All straight through mufflers are very loud when you get into the pedal.

I went with the flowmaster super 44 and I love it plenty of sound but havent been bothered by the boys in blue and I've been raising hell with it for over a year

very good info here ^^^, if you want sound and performance Magnaflow all the way, as stated they are strait through, the smaller the muffler the louder the truck, 18" Maggie seems to be the most purchased through us, however we do get a fair amount of orders for 14" and 22" mufflers as well, I would sy for every 20 Magnaflows that goe out the door maybe 3 Flowmasters do. Flow masters sound nice and everything but it is a different tone for sure, and as they are chambered they do not perform quite as well as a strait through muffler. Hell, throw a cherry bomb extreme on there. Loud as hell when you get on it but quiet cruising around and a great addictive tone. Only cost 40-60 bucks on amazon.

Thanks for the help guys. I think the Magnaflow if the way I'm leaning...if not only for the rusted out problems I'm hearing about Flowmaster...lots of salt on the roads here around Detroit.

So if I go 18", am I using the 4" x 9" or the 5" x 8", or does it not matter? And will it cause any trouble for me, like service engine light on or anything like that?

Just so you know,it's not a direct fit muffler,you'll need extra pipe and some skill to do the muffler swap.
If you're doing it yourself,i'd reconmend lengthening the pipes after the muffler.
We did Audio's muffler swap on my driveway,and we made the mistake of lengthening the 3" pipe ahead of the muffler,wasn't the way to go in hindsight

i need help still havent decided which flowmaster to go with 14, 18, or 22.
youtube is not helping not many 2009-2012 4.7's on there.

Just so you know,it's not a direct fit muffler,you'll need extra pipe and some skill to do the muffler swap.
really? is this for the Maganflow? its not a direct fit? hmmm...
do you need to take it to a muffler shop or is it easy to do?

if the muffler is shorter than the factory muffler none of them will be a direct fit, there are companies out there that take popular mufflers and add the extension pieces and clamps to them so that it becomes a direct fit, but other than that just buying a muffler you will not find a direct fit from the big manufacturers, unless it is a factory replacement muffler which you do not find much of for our Rams

How goods your tool selection.
If you're not well set up on tools,your best bet is probably a muffler shop.
We put a 22" Magnaflow on Audio's truck,and it took the better part of an evening.
In fact i swapped my whole exhaust for a Magnaflow dual set-up in about the same amount of time,as doing just his muffler swap,:doh:
Although we did it the hard way,lol.

Andrew can probably set you up with an aftermarket Magnaflow kit though that is a direct bolt-on with all the piping and adapters already installed

As Seans video can attest to,the 22" on the 4.7's sounds good.
I have the Magnaflow cat back dual set-up on my 13,that uses the 22" muffler,and on the 4.7 they sound really good.
I do have some drone,but that i attribute to being a shortbox regular cab, the pipes are shorter then most,and being a Magnaflow kit,there's no factory resonators either

This is exactly what I'm about to do with my truck and this thread and forum in general have been very helpful! Finally decided on an 18 inch magna flow. I do have one question though... What is the difference between the satin finish and the mirror polish? I realize that it's mainly cosmetic but the satin is still stainless steel right? I like the satin because it is cheaper but I just wanted to double check with you guys. The roads here in Wyoming are always a complete disaster and my truck spends about 60% of its life off road so I want to make sure whatever I get will hold up well. Thanks!
