Just bought my dream truck, a 2014 Longhorn Limited 1500. I'm in love with it, with at least one major exception; it has an open diff. I've been driving it for two weeks now, and I can't handle it! So I plan on swapping out to either the oem mopar unit, or something like an auburn or a Detroit tru trac. I don't have experience with any of these, so I'd love to hear from you guys that DO have limited slips, either stock or otherwise.
What you've got, and how well it works.
I don't do too much off reading, but the one wheel drive gives me hives in winter as we get a lot of snow and ice up here. And come summer I really enjoy the occasional burnouts and donuts :D

Are you asking about limited slips or lockers? The only Ram you can get lockers in is a Power Wagon and AFAIK nobody makes one for the Chrysler 9.25"

I'm referring to the Limited slip differential that comes as an option from Dodge. Or if anyone was in the same boat as myself, stuck with the open diff and decided to install an aftermarket one. I'm trying to get some feedback as to how well they perform before pulling the trigger on something.

If you have the 4X4 option put it in AUTO for a while and drive around before you spring for the posi. I've always ordered posi in my trucks but the deal on the 14 Sport was to good to turn down just because it didn't have posi/limited slip.

It's gone through Michigan's four seasons and I can't say I miss the posi that much.

I have Michelin LTX's on it now and usually have it in two high most of the time. If it's in inclement weather I just hit auto and drive on. The auto is better than posi as it brings all four wheels into play.

In 2 wheel, if I get on it hard from a stop turning a corner, it will spin the less loaded wheel but in general I can't say I miss the posi that much, and certainly not enough to spend $1000+ to install it.

OTOH, if you have two wheel drive it would probably be worth the investment on posi.

My LSD helps immensely in the dirt. I'd love to have a lunchbox in the rear but no one makes one for 4th gen Ram 1500's.

Thanks for the reply Bobs, But I'm looking to do burnouts and donuts once in while, so 4x4 isn't going to help me with that lol

Sweet. And thanks for posting! I'm curious if you've ever tried peeling out on dry asphalt? And if so, if it spun both wheels equally? I'm trying to determine how well the oem Limited slip unit works. If it spins both wheels, then that would be the preferred option. But if not, I would be looking into other options such as Auburn, or Detroit.

OEM LSD will spin both tires on dry pavement

I had an open rear diff on my '14 Express. I hated it. A lot. I had 3.21 gears and the hemi was still ready to torture that one tire on an off camber traffic entry. If it was raining, I could be doing 25-30 in traffic and give it some gas and the tire would start spinning (this is how I got the wife to green-light the expense of adding the LS).

I didn't have 4auto, so it wasn't an option for me. I had the OEM LS installed at a local shop and got the LS unit from Moe's. IMO, it was well worth the added expense. I opted for 3.21 gears and a LS differential in my 2016 rather than a 3.92 with an open differential, although adding a LS is significantly cheaper than upgrading to 3.92 gears, I can manage with the 3.21 gears.

If you give it some gas and turn off TC, you'll leave some 11's behind.

Dad has a 3.21 open diff in his 5 speed Hemi Ram; reading on here that is arguably the most often maligned combination. It works fine for him, he's never been stuck and tows every once in a while. On an off camber turn (road banked in the opposite direction of the turn) the back end can slide out from under you in the rain, but that's the only time I've found it to be an issue.

I've left a pair of tire marks in a couple people's driveways

Sorry friend. For some reason it never occurred to me to try.

I've never tried deliberately doing a burnout in my '15 1500 (Hemi/6-speed/part time 4x4/LSD) but off pavement the limited slip hooks up affirmatively. If one wheel in the back has traction the vehicle moves.

This video's a little embarrassing because at 0:15 I misjudged how well my front tire would climb the washout and gave my front skid plate's paint a little texture but at 0:27 it demonstrates the loaded wheel taking full charge when its unloaded partner could have just spun. I put no special effort into that and I don't remember even hearing the low speed traction control clicking at any point on this trip.
