I do not know the answer to your question, but i have a theory. I would guess that the distance is computed using your average mpg thats registered at the time you Refuel.

I second that thought

Sometimes i have been driving around the Metropolitan area for a few days & i fill up
Then i get on a highway & actually watch my predicted driving range climb

The range is based on your recent average fuel economy. For example, I'm driving an unloaded truck normally, but then I hook up my camper and start towing; the computer recognizes the significant drop in MPG's and adjusts the range. Conversely, when I disconnect and drive an unloaded truck, the computer also recognizes the change and adjusts the range.
