I drove my Ram 2500 with 6.7 Cummins and 6 speed manual transmission to Chicago from Grimsby Ontario towing a sports car on a tandem axel trailer . Towed weight 3500 pounds. I did the drive there and back in 4 legs and averaged on the display of 11.2L KM/100 or 20.95 Miles per US gallon. I run Toyo HT 10 ply truck tires with 75 PSI of air pressure.

I ran the truck at 65 miles per hour and in 6th the engine was turning about 1700 rpm. The truck now has 6000 KM on it.

I could never get this kind of fuel economy with my 4.7 1500 with 5 speed manual transmission.

Well done Ram.

Yes it was an open trailer.

MPG unloaded on the hwy is about 24 to 26 MPG. But then again the manual transmission engine is tuned for lower HP, which in my way of thinking means less fuel consumption.

Is that 24-26 imperial or us gallons? That's EcoDiesel level highway economy for a full size truck if us gallons and would be seriously impressive from what I've seen.

Tires

I thought about that as well on my trip. The tires are Toyo Open Country 265/70R18. While I was driving I compared my vehicle speed to the GPS and the GPS showed I was going 1 MPH slower than the truck odometer.

I have not calculated by hand, Litres of fuel and KM driven. But reading other posts on this form with Automatic transmissions I think they are using the display and not hand calculating the fuel economy.

When I picked up my truck it was March 27th and about 28 degrees out. When I start the engine it idles at 750 RPM. I have a key start not a push button start. I saw a U tube video on an auto with the Cummins and once the engine starts it holds at 1000RPM until warm up. I think the engine tuning with the Manual transmission is a total different tune than the trucks with the Automatic transmissions. The dealer say the MPG I am getting is to be expected.

One other point I ordered the truck and the window sticker does not have any EPA estimated fuel economy on it. My 4.7 did when I purchased it.

Sounds like great economy if the display calculated correctly. Have you checked the accuracy by hand calculation- apparently there can be a fair margin of error in the display calculated mpg's versus actual. Either way, the 4.7 never stood a chance at being a good truck motor.

Update

Today I filled up the truck and put in 60 Litres or 15.87 US Gallons of fuel.

I drove a distance from Saginaw Michigan towing my trailer and some around town driving of 528 KM or 330 miles.

That is giving me a fuel economy of 11.3 Litres of fuel per 100 KM or 20.79 Miles per US Gallon.

I have seen it higher when not towing. It appears there is big difference between the manual and automatic transmission for fuel consumption.

That's great MPG Tony. I'm sure your right with the engine restricted to limit the torque.

I'm seeing 18.6 MPG average and it's slowly going up, but I don't drive the truck enough to need a fill yet. When I do, I'll hand calculate it.

I am impressed with the cummins, no fuss, no muss, just goes.

i have a 2000 5.9 cummins six speed and the thing has some real torque and power. unfortunately, the fuel economy is not so good...i get around 16 or so with that running empty and not hauling. sounds like they dialed in the new motors. oh, btw, i prefer gear jamming too...a lot more fun than the auto trannys
