I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup. For some reason the battery keeps draining.

After I replaced with a new battery I thought I may have left the dome lights on. Turns out that is not the case. Full charge and trucks starts fine.

Today I got to start it and the battery is dead again. I notice on the dashboard by the speedometer there is a flashing red light and it sounds like it is making a noise.

No lights or anything left on in the truck.

Any ideas?

One fairly common cause of battery draining, is an open diode in the alternator; with the engine running, the volt. output is at about 14.5v, but
with the engine off, the alt. voltage drops to 0, and the battery is now discharging in the alt. windings through the open diode. To test, charge the battery right up, disconnect the alt. wires being careful not to touch metal with the red wire; measure the battery voltage, and measure it again a few hrs. later; it should not have changed; if it has, you have a drain somewhere; if it hasn't reconnect the alt., and check the voltage again later ; if it has dropped, you have an open diode in the alt.

first you need to know, how much it drains- disconnect the ground wire and install a multimeter in row to check the amps it pulls. But you should do this after the engine is shut off and all contacts are used at least 30-60 minutes before, to make sure, the power management module switches to sleep. Means- open the hood and let it sit for an hour.
~0.5A +/- is normal- that's life support for radio and anti-theft system. if it goes above, you can somewhat estimate which module pulls the power- pull one fuse after another and see, when the current draw drops- that's where you have your issue.

you're welcome.

Hi All, I see a lot of posts about battery drain here. But I do not see anyone saying they have found it or fixed it? For 6 months now my 2014 Ram 1500 will drain a battery in 3 to 5 days if it is not driven. I took it to the dealer, they could not find anything wrong, they claimed it was a bad cell in the NEW battery I just put into the truck So they put a 2nd new battery in the truck and sure enough now that battery dies too in 3 to 5 days. They claim the draw on the circuit is with in spec 2 milliamps. They claim the alternator is good too. Has anyone actually fixed this issue? Thanks in advance! Rick
