I believe that 31 gallon tank on your 2500, is the standard tank
If i am not mistaken, they also make a larger tank as an option

I think you are right as it is listed under standard equipment. Seems like it would not be cost effective to have a 31 AND 32 gallon tank.

Only the Longhorn and Outdoorsman come standard with the 32 gallon tank. I would have ordered it anyway if mine didn't already come with it. I like being able to fill up at home where the gas is cheap and haul my trailer to the mountains and back home on a single tank of gas. My '97 Explorer only had a 17 gallon tank and got about the same MPG as my Ram gets when towing so I always had to stop at my destination to fill up again at a much higher price. Same thing when I drive to California. Once you get within 20 miles of the border gas starts getting outrageous. Once you cross the border it goes up $1.00-$1.50 per gallon higher than home. I'll fill up usually in Quartzsite and drive all over California on my tank and then fill back up in Quartzsite on my way home.

Just got my 32 gal truck last week so still getting used to it. The range said 70mi, and it took 25 gallons to fill up, which then showed me a range of 399. with a big storm coming I topped off today as the range said 250 mile, and the gauge showed 50%, the top off was 12.5 gallons. So my 2017 is not reading accurate either. I'll have a few years to put more tanks through it but it would be nice if the STAR case gets sorted out.
my 2017 is out of warranty already, anyone know if the STAR case would still be covered, or is that wishful thinking??

Are you expecting to put 32 gallon in it? If so, that isn't how they work. 32 gallon is the capacity including the dead air space.
Yours doesn't seem to be that far off if much at all. They aren't overly precise.
Also you can't go by the range and expect it to be gospel. Say it reads 5 mile range, you might go 0, you might go 20 - a lot of variables are involved.

Nah, more so sharing my experience with a new and unfamiliar truck and I'm new to the FCA family anyhow maybe its just how it is. So of the past vehicles I've owned (for discussions sake) if the stated capacity was 20 gallons and I ran it uncomfortably low with DTE saying 10 miles, I could expect to fill the tank with 18 gallons. Not that I run my tanks that low typically, that seems foolish to me, but you know it happens sometimes especially *when your lousy brother in law borrows it for the weekend while your away and leaves it on fumes. So in those situations it seems that a 10% cushion is built in or there is some margin of error in the gauging system. Whether the vehicle actually had a 16, 21, or a 36 gallon tank as in my last F series- the approx 10% seemed to me to be a recurring trend for gauge accuracy ("So my 2017 is not reading accurate either") based solely upon my experiences.

So while you say mine is 'not that far off'-and I cant disagree that its probably not that far off, it;s farther off than what I'm used to, hence the post, and since I read up on this before buying the truck its enough of an issue that I'm not alone. I agree about the variables and the biggest of those may be about what your 'used to' I guess, and I will get used to this truck. Lastly since you bring up an interesting point I wonder how much 'dead space' is built in to the tank for volumetric expansion aside from the fill tube and vent.

*The exception to my experience being a BMW sedan that was dead on the mark when at 2 miles DTE it stalled on bridge only 2,000 feet away from the pump....thanks again lousy brother in law. My 2 fuel station stops are showing closer to 20% for the Ram.

I've been able to get 28 gallons out of my 32 gallon tank and the fuel gauge said E for a long time. IMHO the gauge is not accurate, especially when compared to other vehicles I have owned that have all been spot on.

On our recent road trip, my range said 48 miles after the light came on and the chime.
I drove another 5+ miles to the next gas stop and put in 30.5 gallons of fuel. My average MPG was 20.2 so in a real world situation, I felt that the range/ mpg was dead on accurate.

WOW I would agree, bang on the money. Yours is a 2500 though correct, not the Hemi?
Maybe the Hemi's MDS going on and off during stop/go city conditions creates a less accurate gauge?
Wonder hoe the Pentastart's accuracy is

I have the pentastar in a Town and Country - we use them for work.
I pushed mine the other day, range was down to 5 miles. Filled up and it only took 17.6 gallons on a 20 gallon tank.
I have never been able to fit 18 gallon or more in it.

If the gas station pavement is at an angle, that can vary the amount that you can fit it by a decent amount.

The range tends to go off of the ave. fuel econ. number.
But say the range is 10 mile @ 18 mpg ave. You start up a big mountain with a station just 5 miles up, your current mpg drops to 3 mpg and all the fuel in the tank rushes to the rear. IF the range was dead accurate you wouldn't make it to the station.

However, when the guage reads empty, the tank still has a few gallons in it - this protects the fuel pump from running dry and saves us from running out of fuel.

You could pull the pump and sending unit and bend the arm to make sure it is sitting on the bottom of the tank when reading empty.
(Just remember, the gas is the only thing cooling a hot fuel pump and they do get hot)

Good point that the consumption is incredibly dynamic, but RTE should adjust for that some right?

I'm a flat lander here, a hill for us is a bridge over water, LOL

Yes it would, but (always a but lol), you would have to reset the ave. mpg and get a more accurate current fuel consumption at that moment.
The ave. mpg is over a few hundred miles - not sure on the exact amount - but it isn't overly dynamic unless reset.

If you reset yours, what mpg do you get doing 75 mph on cruise? When I am down in Fl., I might get 17 mpg - let's just say I am not thrilled with that.
But up here in Pa, I might get 3 up the big hills, 17 on the flat, and up to 99 going down.

Off Topic, are you evacuated? Where at is S. Fl. Not looking good for the Keys and who knows on the west coast yet.

I suppose the bottom line is for me the 32 gallon tank is a worthwhile option, and gauge accuracy or not I am happy.

I am in the West Palm Beach area, about 1 block off the ocean. it is a mandatory evacuation zone but I don't leave, can't for work and wouldnt anyhow, natives don't run. Also, the geography here really negates the major storm surge concern though the water is up about 18" as of now and hi tide is 3 hours away. none of the 5-10 feet nonsense the weather channel cooks up, that is for the ratings! now on the west coast of Florida or other areas without a barrier island dune, small inlets restricting water, and no deep water offshore-its very real. So long as the worst happens off hi tide were pretty good, if its a full tide then the water cant drain

I have huge trees out front, and while I wanted to keep my truck here as a just in case escape vehicle, once Irma started tracking west I put the truck in the office garage, I just got her after all, had it been a month ago I would have gladly left my F150 under that tree, hoping it would fall and flatten her.
Power crapped out at 10pm last night, my generator is picking up the slack, and I still have cable/internet. woohoo!, but the bigger winds are yet to come still, expecting about 70mph
