Low Fuel Warning

Purchased my RAM 1500 a couple of months ago and window sticker says it has a 32 gallon gas tank. I've filled up about 4 times and each time I waited until the low fuel warning message displayed. But when I fill up, I have never had to put in more than 26 gallons. Are there really 6 gallons still in the tank when the low fuel warning comes on?

RAM knows people drive for miles ignoring the light. I always fill up when my tank hits half full. The light has never come on.

One member said he drove until the truck wouldn't go any more with a jerry can in the bed. It shut off with 2 gallons left and he had to add gas for the truck to start up again

So that all of us who are used to how the fuel gauge works will push it too far and run out of gas

I made a thread on this a while ago. I took it into the dealer and the software said normal, they sent it into the FCA techs for review. At that time I could almost bet they didn't re calibrate the computer for the 32 gallon tanks from the factory. Some people had the same issue, others called me crazy and said I complain too much. Well to all the haters I'd like to take a moment and say HA! I told you so! Now I wait for the software update.............

After how long?

Our pumps are in the tank. Dropping the tank would be way easier Id think

Back when they were mechanical and not electric?

I play chicken with my gas light every week and I always lose. I've yet to see it come one. My last Dodge wouldn't give you a light it would just cut off on you. So im to scary to see if this will do the same. I get it on the line right were it starts to turn red and then I just put gas in it.

On my 2016 Ram Laramie 2500, I have yet to have the low fuel warning come on. I have been in for several months and yesterday was the first time I drove my truck. (Doctor said I could drive again) I drove it again today. I am going to run it as far as I can to get the two-month-old diesel fuel out of the tank. I am thinking about putting a Titan replacement tank in the truck.

I guess this is why Chrysler says (five extra gallons of fuel) on the sticker. The 2nd part of the sticker. I thought I got 5 free gallons of gas when I bought it and wondered how they did it with an already full tank. I'm going to get my dealer to update it so I can really trust the gauge. Oh, fuel pumps pretty much need to be in the tank. They pump at least 50 psi across most vehicles if not more on many. You can only suck 29 psi or 1 atmosphere. All the new pumps for the last 20 or 30 years are safer being cooled by the fuel. They are usually two pumps in the same housing. One is right on the bottom for priming the higher pressure one just above it. The second one can't pump air.

No you were right. The 32 gallon tank is listed as its own separate option

I have not had a problem with my 2016 Ram 2500. I have not had the low fuel light come on. :4-dontknow:
I average about 14 to 16 mpg. :thk:I have the 32gal tank. I think FCA has really done a disservice to their customers, by not offering either a larger fuel tank or two tanks. My old Ford F-250 had an auxiliary tank that I believe was 20 gals. I replaced the front tank with a 50 gal.:smiley_thumbs_up:and it cost not anywhere near what a Transfer Flow or an Aero Tank replacement tank costs.Today but you also have to remember I bought the replacement tank in 1998 ! I would love to replace the tank on my 2016 Ram, but $1300.00 dollars is a little steep, then with say 4hrs. labor @ $125.00 an hour I can buy a lot of diesel fuel.

2016 Ram 1500, 32 gallon tank, around 15 mpg. Low fuel light comes on, 40 mile range on display. 25.5 gallons filled the tank. So if the gauge was accurate, I would estimate 3.8 gallons left on empty which is a 56 mile reserve if you could actually use the last drop.

Here is my take on it. They want there to be reserve left when it says empty. Even my 1996 ram 1500 with a 26 gallon tank had 4-6 gallons left on empty, you could drive until the gauge read below empty. The closest I ever got to running that one out was 1.5 gallons left.

A steep incline could you let you run out if the tank gets too low, so they are always going to program it on the safe side. Seems reasonable to me anyway. I'm interested how it would be if there is an update. Currently I can get gas at my convenience when the low fuel indicator comes on.
