RPM Surge

2014 1500 with the 8 speed, 121,000 miles and owned since new. Recently I noticed the engine will surge (rpm's fluctuate) a couple hundred rpm about every 5 seconds while driving under load. It does this for the first 15 minutes. It really feels like the torque converter locking and unlocking. I've also noticed an occasional slip in the 3-4 shift at low throttle.

Once completely warmed up the issue goes away. No slip or oddities under full throttle. I changed the fluid and pan with the correct ZF variety as soon as this started happening and it made no change. The factory fluid looked brand new with barely anything in the pan and magnets.

Any ideas? I'm really concerned, especially since I have raved about the transmission in this truck for the first 120k miles. I would hate to have to replace it so soon.

I also have this same issue along with many others and still dont see any resolutions...
Hi all,

We certainly understand why this would be concerning! If you're not able to determine a solution based on suggestions from fellow forum members and you decide to address this with your dealer, please let us know via private message. We would be more than happy to provide you with an additional layer of assistance for that process.

I didn't have any codes either, and mine started getting bad around 130k, and now have 147k, and power was way down. Everyone was telling me it was a vacuum leak or the TC. When I looked at the exhaust pipes I noticed they were getting black, which is a sign you are running rich. The VVT solenoid works with the cam phase to advance/retard the timing. Since it could reach the advance or retard needed, the pcm was adjusting the fuel and air flow to compensate, hence the rpm going up and down.

Update for anyone that has a similar issue: it has been getting progressively worse and the transmission has slip in all gears at 145,000 miles. I replaced the valvebody with no change. I just purchased a transmission out of a 2017 with 4k miles and plan to do the swap next weekend.

I am having this same issue... 2014 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi with 8 speed auto ..started around August out of the blue. I have no CEL and when taken to transmission shops.. they have told me that after hooking it to scanners and driving that the transmission is running normal. They do agree that they can feel and see the RPM surge. I have cleaned the throttle body and the transmission fluids have been checked.. really at a loss right now with no CEL.

Symptoms:
RPM surges around 1200-1500 and is consistent like a heart beat when driving steady at 40-50mph
have noticed a good amount of drop is gas mileage
when driving up a steady hill under low speed there is some shudder when the RPM surges
After about 15 minutes of driving it seems to level off and become normal again.

FIX FIX FIX my truck would surge 2 to 300rpm every now and then. Like all the time, slowing down speeding up all of the above. After countless hours on Google, one video fixed it all. In drive, click down one gear- and plus ➕️ back to 8 if you have the 8 speed and 6 for 6 speed of course. Fixed my truck right away. It's like the truck was going to 4cyl to 7 back and fourth all the time and with the exhaust it was super annoying. Click the gear to 8 every time I drive and after a year, I don't have that problem anymore ! Hope this helps someone instead of spending 1000's at the dealership...

I JUST CONFIRMED THIS FIX! Thank you so much Jamie032 for posting this on the forum. I have an aftermarket exhaust so the rpm surging and weird shifting was super annoying and just not an overall smooth ride like it should be with an 8 speed. I do however have an occasional engine light coming on with a cylinder 5 misfire code so this led me down a deep rabbit hole and that still might need to be addressed with new spark plugs but I will reset the light and update this forum as I troubleshoot. (Hoping it is not the cams and lifters issue and just this weird quirk)

Also, this did seem to effect my MPG positively after one test drive.

I have the same issue - rpm surge, etc. No codes. A year ago the dealer told me to drive it until it throws a code or something breaks. Unacceptable in my mind but drove away. The issue has gotten worse so took to independent shop. They said it was a bad accelerator peddle position sensor. However, after two new peddle installs same problem still existed. They can see there is a 2 amp rhythmic drop to the APPS but they can’t determine why. So, they tapped out and I still have no fix.

Any ideas or solutions from members with like issue?

Thanks!!

Anyways the last post was a fix for mds system, but if you want to fix the surge every 5 seconds, change the oil in the transmission a few times. Fixed mine, the oil is definately not lifetime. I drained/filled 3 times and the problem is completely gone. Stop going to every garage you know and just change the oil. It will take about 500km between changes. Thank me later

I had spark plugs replaced, transmission fluid replaced and installed a new throttle body control without IAC. I unplugged the battery for an hour not knowing if this had anything to do with the "adaptive learning" and the fact, the shop installed the wrong axles, not accounting for my 4" lift just prior to me having this issue. No clue what's wrong. It happens while going over 105kmh in Overdrive. If I hit tow mode it stays at 2K and I get crap mileage. If I take out of tow mode and gear out of OD to 8th gear it stays at 2K. My solution has been to drive at 103kmh in automatic which I think is staying in 8th gear because when I hit the "-" it goes to 7. At 104kmh it'll surge from 1.5k to 2K and back every 10-15 seconds. Its like it's an Overdrive problem???
