Thoughts on trim levels?

So thinking of a new truck. I'm debating between the Laramie and Limited. I want the Night Edition so Longhorn won't fit my desires. Really prefer the all leather surface of the Limited. Air suspension has me concerned though, I typically keep my trucks for about 10-11 years and I'm sure the repair cost of air suspension is steep. Looking for input...

I looked at a Limited when I bought my Laramie last month. It was very nice (so is the Laramie), But it had a few things I didn’t want (4X4, power running boards, black [BTDT, and will never have another black vehicle], the ”Transformer” tailgate, and the infamous 12” screen). It was about 16 grand more than the Laramie. I really liked the interior, but not 16 grand’s worth.

I did much prefer the trim levels of the Laramie over the Big Horns.

Yeah, I'm looking at some of the Laramie editions that are built up identical to the Limited with the exception of the suspension and interior trim. Level 2 and safety package and such. Difference in price is about $5K-7K. Local dealership tried playing hardball on the Limited wanting insurance, driver license and credit app before even discussing the price. Then they brought in the sales manager who had a complete attitude and told me he had 2 other appointments later that day for the same trick and the sticker price was it...period. I left and his boss called and even offered to meet with me to work out a deal while the dealership was closed. That tactic doesn't impress me at all.

So sad to hear this. Your experience is so old school that it stinks and this is a dealer I would NEVER do business with. Contemporary selling techniques are so superior and easy to feel comfortable with. I don't know where you are located but if you have other dealer choices, visit them. A few extra miles from home could be well worth the distance. If your choices are limited, use an organization that helps...like Costco, AAA, Consumer Reports, etc. They'll get you well below MSRP. Use the Internet and go to Edmunds and others for pricing references. Don't be "had" by a bad dealership. Keep in mind that a reputable dealer can get you almost any model, equipped as you want because there is a whole lot of inventory out there and transports are moving those from one dealer to another every day. Good luck.

The higher trim levels are designed to greatly increase dealer profits. I can configure a Bighorn to be identical to the Laramie and save $5,000. If you don't mind paying $7,000 for leather seats then you are in a very different financial position than I am.

With the economy in free fall (for those of us in the working class) I would expect some great deals in December as dealers move to make the best of the current situation with millions of Americans having lost their jobs. On the other hand the fewer trucks sold mean the dealers are going to try harder to get customers to buy upgraded trim packages to make more profit from each customer.

Crazy as it may seem; down here the real estate and auto markets are going gangbusters! The guy we always buy from is someone we’ve known for years. He’s been in the car business for twenty something years, and went back into sales about five years ago. When I met him, he was running the dealership. Anyway, he said that the previous month (about three months ago now) was his biggest month he’s ever done in sales; 23 cars in one month. When I bought my Laramie in early September; he’d taken two weeks off for vacation the month before, and still sold fifteen cars.

Same thing with the real estate market. Stuff is selling about as soon as it’s listed, and I get letters from agents every week wanting to buy our places for big bucks. We're not interested in selling, as we have waterfront properties, and they’re not making any more of that around here.

Stocks and municipal bonds are doing pretty well again now, after taking a pretty good dip about three weeks ago. Before that they had been going up comfortably.

I decided today that I am going to do the lifter repair on mine and keep it for now. Figure if they offer some good deals later than maybe I'll jump on it but only if completely happy with the deal and depending on my mood. Depending, I may even just keep mine as a work truck. Thanks for all the advice as I'm still going to be continuing my research till I pull the trigger.

It's always timing, there is thousands of mark up in every vehicle. If they NEED to make a sale and you have the time, it will happen. I left the dealership in March at $60k after 3 phone calls they came down to $50k and I thought that was good for March. So even at $50, you know they still made money.

I think the Laramie is the sweet spot in trim levels. I picked up my '16 used with 32K on the clock 20 months ago. I am thinking I will keep it another year and then look for a 2018. Mine has everything I want except the 12" screen and apple car play/android auto and air suspension. If I cant find a used one with all the specs I want (Ram Box is also non-negotiable must have for me) I guess I will have to go new.

I picked up a Bighorn-Night Edition on Memorial Day. Yes I did not get the leather, the 12" screen (8.4"), nor the split tailgate. Negotiated and worked with a very good sales guy for 3-4 weeks. Color is the dark metallic grey, and it looks awesome with all the badging blacked out. Got it at a great price, and within my budget. Laramie and Limited were too expensive.

Sad to hear that - each dealer is an independent business and RAM corporate has minimal ability to control how they do business. But I would NEVER buy a pickup at MSRP as they are a dime-a-dozen (well, OK, not that cheap) all over the country. RAM has a great website where you build the truck you want, then choose a search range from your ZIP code and see who has what that is an exact match (rare for me) or is close to what you want. (I am not too picky about color) If you don't find anything you're interested in, change the ZIP to one you're willing to drive to, and see if you can find what you want there. Most (but not all) dealers will list their discounted pricing either in the RAM site, or on their site the RAM site has a link to. There is a CJDR store in my town, and in 15 years of living there and buying a total of 20 CJDR vehicles, they have yet to want to come anywhere near what I get in a discount by driving three or four hours away. (talking thousands, not hundreds) So don't let one jerk dealer take away your desire to get something new.
That being said, my newest Ram is a 2500 Night Edition White (odd that Night is white, eh?) Laramie, and I love the looks of the thing - even the wheels! I have to have leather (try getting Boxer dog hair out of cloth), and love the ventilated seats! This is my second RAM with the larger screen - will not get another without that too - I can't see the street names on the largest of the smaller CJDR NAV screens, but can with that new super-large screen. Can't comment on the air suspension, as I've only had that on a Grand Cherokee - which was great but it's not a truck. One caution - the coil spring suspension on the 2500's (w/o the air) is a little bouncy with no load - versus the 1500 which is smoother with no load. Not bad in the 2500, but not the Caddy ride of the 1500.

If you can afford it, it just cost a little more to go first class. On my 2017 2500 4X4 6.7 limited mega cab, I love it. You can check different dealerships say within a 300 mile range and you can maybe find a good deal. I live about 250 miles from Fort Worth and looked on the internet to find what I wanted. That dealership gave me the best deal. The truck listed for $74,000 and something. They knocked off $10,000 and gave me $26,000 for my 2011 1500 5.7 4X4. Then I had an affiliates reward. So I paid around $35,000 and something for it. Just don't get in a hurry and if you don't like their numbers, walk away. If they really want your business, they will deal. Just don't be afraid to drive to get a deal. The local dealership that I normally use, takes care of all of my recalls. So you don't have to take it back to the dealership that you bought it from for any recalls or service work.

I custom ordered a Laramie so I could get the bench seat and pay for just the options I wanted which was a lot . :) Note that the bench seats are the same as the other seats but without the middle counsel. My favorite options are the Air Suspension and Ram Boxes. The air ride is so nice and the air suspension is very useful when towing. Might not get another vehicle without it! The Ram Boxes are way more useful and hold much more than I first thought. You also don't loose any bed width with the Ram Boxes except that on each side of the wheel wells.

I know I am done with FCA after all this mess with both Jeeps I bought . I DEEPLY REGRET buying my 2020 Cherokees. Learn from my MISTAKES. My 1st 2020 Cherokee was a lemon and my 2nd 2020 Cherokee was not built right and neither Jeep or the selling dealer
Bob Poynter Columbus
will make it right . BUYER BEWARE do NOT BUY a Cherokee or trust a Jeep dealer. Just Empty Every Pocket is a TRUE acronym.

Laramie vs Limited.
I've built my own truck (3500 Limited) because there were no trucks with the options I wanted anywhere in Canada and I wasn't going to settle for less or pay extra for the optioins I didn't want (sunroof, ram box). While building my truck, I was originally planing to go with Laramie, but after adding all the optioins I wanted, it became more expensive than the Limited, which had most of the options I wanted already included. So look into that before buying.
And unless you're in a hurry, build your own, don't settle for less. This way they won't be able to pull the same shit trick on you, like they have 2 more customers on this truck. With the build sheet in hand, you can call or email a number of dealers and see who can come down the lowest, this way you're comparing apples to apples. That's pretty much what I did and I've got a great discount. I picked the brains off one dealer and took their best deal and and emailed a bunch of other dealers to see who can beat it. Most didn't reply but a few did and I came up with even better figure. Then I called my buddy who's a RAM salesman and asked if his dealer could beat the offer, and they did.
