HI, Just bought a new 2014 Ram 1500 with the 3.6 ltr. I noticed while driving normally that the coolant temp is around 204 upwards to 220 plus. Is this normal for these engines? Ask the dealer and he said that these new engines run hotter.

Thanks, BigMac

yes I see the same thing. Example I was towing 5000lbs up a 5% grade in 95 degree temperatures. I was at 228 temp. I got a little worried but it never really got any worse. AND to add to it I was at 6800 elevation. The truck was working and did a pretty good job. When I got back home I went to the dealership and talked to the guy who said he works on all of the Pentastar motors. He said the motors have higher degree thermostat. It is fine to see temps of 205 to 228 when running. If the alarm goes off... then there is problem.

I have the 2016 1500 3.6 ltr and our 3 way coolant valve was leaking coolant... replaced it and a few days later the new one went bad... replaced again and a new thermostat and seems to still be running hot! Coolant temp jumped to 236 and the temperature needle would bounce a lil bit past the half way mark... soo confused n don't know the what the issue is! It has 54000 miles n while changing the parts I flushed the coolant and added new and burped the system as well!

Any help would be greatly appreciated... we have no clue what it can be...

Also no check engine lights have come on at all during this!

After replacing the 3 way coolant valve 3 times... and replacing the thermostat it has not had any issues since! So during normal driving the coolant temp is between 200-230! Found out that these engines do run at the temps normally! When going uphill and towing a 2500 pound pop up it will be at 230 but hasn't got any higher then that! I'm not a fan of how hot these engines run but after a lot of research this is normal! The 3 way valves are plastic 'n a real bad part for these engines... because the valve gets stuck open which is why I had to replace it twice within 2 weeks!

Hope this helps! Let me know if u need anything else!!

Where is the 3 way valve located

The 3 way valve is super easy to replace but they are made of plastic... the replacement we got from O'Reilly's ended up being bad after 3 days of it being on and it dropped all the coolant again, took it back and got a new one that also went bad after a week... we are on our 3rd one now and it seems to be holding up as it has been 3 weeks now!

Make sure you burp it all the way by placing the front end of the truck pointing up a hill!! Will update this post if something else happens! When we got the 3rd replacement valve we bought a new thermostat just incase but I'm sure the old one was just fine as I tested it!

Good luck and will be happy to know that it gets fixed for u as well! Be blessed!!!
