You wont find one. What you're looking for is a fuse with power on in the accessory/run position.

 

Yes! That too......I think. Maybe I am getting in over my head. I read the chart in my owners manual and it is Chinese to me. Then I have a friend telling me I should stay out of my wiring harness and run a feed wire from the battery. I don't know how to tell which fuse is a power on fuse. So then it says something about a voltmeter. Wow, the fender flares were so much easier.....What is the first electrical thing a TOTAL rookie should start with, other than changing a battery?

In your case, a test light would be easier to use for finding a switched 12V source. If you look closely at the fuses you'll see a very small metal tip on either side of the number on it. Connect the clip on your test light to a good metal ground and probe those tips with the key on and the key off to determine which ones are on with the key. If you're the least bit uncomfortable with tackling electrical work, let a professional do it.

 

I found a power ign 10 amp fuse that works with power on/off. I appreciate your help. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, and my disclaimer.....

I tapped into the cigar lighter fuse when I installed my bully dog. It has power only when the key is on.

 

Thanks again guys. I started to feel overwhelmed as I am not into, nor do I understand, electronics AT ALL! But it really is quite simple once I got in there and started working.

I guess that means nothing has been set on fire and the airbags haven't deployed.

I appreciate all your input. I was set to wire it to the 10 amp hvac but then my neighbor, a F**d service mgr, came over to "help" and told me if he sees this (evidence of a programmer/tuner) on one of his customers trucks, he will deny work to it. His suggestion, find an accessory wire within the cab to tap into. Stay out of the engine bay. So my husband now feels I should run it off the OBDII until he gets home and we can go through the cab together. Is it true and is THAT big of a deal made over having these programmers/tuners in your vehicle when it comes to warranty?

Yeah, if they catch a tuner on it and can relate it to a problem it could have contributed to, they can deny the warranty claim. We've never refused to work on one but it could become a customer pay issue. As Sablefish recommended, the power outlet is a great place to tap into as long as you don't have a ton of other things plugged into it that could cause the fuse to repeatedly blow. The down side to that is that sometimes cheap made/defective accessory plugs will cause the fuse to blow and your tuner could go dead while driving down the road.

 

just run the wire thru the fire wall and connect it in the fuse box with a fuse tap Then just unplug it when you bring your truck in.

 

Simply unplugging it won't cut it if there's a warranty issue. There can't be any trace of it left behind.

 

I know, I was meaning to unplug the power tap right from the fuse. Takes about 5 seconds. Then pull the wire out with the programmer.
