Check the fuses and relays in the TIPM (in front of the battery). It is always a good idea to slightly rock them and push down on them at the same time once in a while. For some reason in some trucks they tend to work themselves a little loose. Check for any blown fuses, the fuse name and location are molded on the inside top cover.
If that doesn't help you may have a bad control module or loose connectors. To check this you will have to pull the radio bezel off to see if the connectors are properly secured.

From your description it sounds like this may be part of the problem, connectors or a bad control module.
Next steps would be to make sure the system has freon in it and monitor your radiator level to see if you have a slow leak in the HVAC system for that smell.
