2016 Ram Problems

A little less than 2 Weeks ago I picked up a brand new Ram 1500 Sport crew cab, after 1000kms this is where I'm at now.

Drivers rear door panel rattles with the radio on
Drivers rear door glass has a manufacturing defect and theres a piece of glass basically sticking out of the middle of it.
Air leak at speeds above 80km/h from the passenger side front door area
Heated seats don't work very well at all, I don't know if thats a defect of they just don't get very warm in these trucks, it also feels as if the seat back doesn't heat at all
Worst factory paint job I've ever seen on a vehicle.

Those issues aren't a huge deal and I just chalk it up to mass production but the next 2 I have a huge problem with.

Lifter tick on cold starts, I've heard it twice when I started the truck, most times I remote start it from far away though so I don't know how many times its done it that I haven't heard, its not the Hemi tick its a definite and distinct lifter tick, heres a video, not my truck but mine sounds the exact same during startup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xENSuondogI

The last one is what I can best describe as a rolling vibration on the highway at speeds of 105km/h on up. Its not the MDS shutter because if I manually put the transmission in 8th it disables the MDS and still does it, but if I shift it to 7th the vibration goes away completely.

I have a service appointment for Tuesday morning for everything I've listed except for the vibration as today was the first time I actually got the truck out on the highway so I'll let them know about that when I take it in.

My question is am I being unreasonable here in the fact that I basically want the dealership or FCA canada to essentially buy the truck back at this point and put me into another one? The first group of issues are whatever but if they have to tear into my brand new truck to replace the lifters and who knows what to fix the vibration but based on my troubleshooting seems to be a transmission issue I find unacceptable on a vehicle this new and with such low mileage.

Would not say unreasonable but unrealistic.

Don't get me wrong. not implying that your are being a Chicken Little, nothing could be farther from the Truth. Simply mean that darn few companies, today, will do anything more than the bare minimum that they must, either by Law or extensive negative public opinion, which would cost them more money, in the long run.

Familiarize with your nations states lemon laws, if you even have such. see if you can force it to happen, should you need to do so. Be polite, at all times. Be polite but be firm. Do not let them tell you this is normal or as designed. Drive other new trucks, equiped same as yours. Make sure yoru problems are unique.

I wish you the very best of luck.

post back your results. Specially if they actually figure out what causes what and hwo to repair it.

may save another a ton of headache, year or three down the line.

Good Luck to you!

And thats exactly what I'm worried about, I know they have to take the heads off to replace the lifters which is not something I'm too happy about on a truck that has what equates to 625 miles on it.

I appreciate the reply, I'm definitely going to look into all my options. The dealership I bought the truck from is really good and we have bought other vehicles from them in the past so I'm hoping they will work with me on this.

Oh, if that is your worry, it is no worry, at all.

Seriously, take a chill pill, drink a beer, relax.

Sucks that it happens to your new truck but, in the grand scheme of things, I would much rather worry about stated truck issues instead of a kid diagnosed with Cancer or the lose of a parent.

Some human put the head on the engine, in the first place. That guy may have had a fight with his wife, that morning, or the cute busty girl, working on the line, right next to him, may have bent to far forward and he was justifiably distracted.

Bottom Line, Jesus was Perfect. Or so they say.
The rest of us can and do make mistakes.
My poor wife has been paying for her mistake (saying "I do") for over 30 years now.

That's what the warranty is for, to fix the mistakes.

Now, go grab your guys/gals bottom and be thankful that you could afford to buy a new truck, which is pissing you off. A lot of folks got to drive old junk that pisses them off, even more.

By the way, Good Luck and I hope the figure it out.

I know its not the end of the world, just disappointing. I'll definitely keep this thread updated with the outcome, I keep video taping it every time I start it now hoping to get the tick on camera to show the tech, I really don't want to go through a bunch of could not duplicate etc.

That "lifter tick" is normal on some startups, especially if really cold. I've owned two Rams now (2013 and current 2014) that both did/do it at times. It goes away just as quickly as the one in the video (after a second or two). You'll read many, many reports of people who've had the engines do that for over a hundred thousand miles with no engine issues, its not bad enough to cause any damage evidently.

However, the vibration at highway speeds is a different story. Definitely demonstrate that one to the techs, along with any other issues you have.

My thoughts

Tires are out of balance or just bad
You do have the HEMI tick if the noise goes away in 20 seconds or less, Synthetic oil will cut the time down

The door needs more foam in the area where the hinges are

That still leaves a few other things

Good Luck

Agree with GTYAnkee.
Google how I fixed hemi tick or variations of that.

Synthetic oil has been the way most guy stop it. Redline comes to mind. Also, changing the weight has helped others quiet down their trucks.

These "defects" were there when you bought It, seems like your problem as you should have paid more attention inspecting it before you bought it.

Couldn't help but laugh about the buy back, people with real issues have problems get them bought back.

Play nice and do not make it personal.

Take a Nap. Might wake up , in a better mood.

That doesn't sound like lifter tick, it sounds like an exhaust leak, likely from broken manifold bolts or a bad gasket perhaps. Also sounds like its taking longer to start than it should.

Don't go with a different oil viscosity, if anything that just increases the likelihood of problems due to oil not getting through the passages, like a collapsed lifter because its getting starved for a little bit when MDS activates/deactivates. It would probably be fine, but there's just no reason to do it and gives the dealer as reason to deny you warranty service.

When I first got my Laramie my HEMI was a little loud but after 2k miles its just about nonexistent. I think the engine should be fine. Your truck hasn't broken in yet. The other issues can easily be remedied by the dealer. Get it fixed and enjoy your new RAM.

As stated by "gofishn" relax, go in with your concerns, explain them and leave out the drama! Give them a shot at the repairs, they may or may not get them all on the first try. My guess is: they will need to order the glass, NOT a big deal, doors may just need adjustment.
I picked up my 16 Sport 1 year ago, and have only had a "couple" issues, but nothing as compared to yours.
Remember, you get a lot more with Honey, than vinegar! Treat them as you would like to be treated!
I work in a collision center, somebody comes in yelling and screaming, I'll do what it takes to make it right, somebody comes in asking or pointing out concerns, I'll try to go a little further than they expect! Just my personal experience, I've been running collision shops for 35+ years.

hopefully everything can be taken care of for you, with the exception of the paint. the ram is a great truck and if you can get your issues resolved you will really enjoy the truck. for some reason paint quality doesn't seem to matter anymore. not just fca, you can see it on a new corvette, especially a black one. try to demonstrate the exact issues to the dealer so they can easily see your point. good luck

Jared2`s issues really surprise me. I received my Ram (factory ordered)in March of this year and I gotta say it`s, well... perfect. Paint, best I`ve seen on any new vehicle I ever purchased (all factory ordered). Fit and finish number 1. Ride, performance, driveability all great. The 5.7 amazes me with it`s power, economy and smoothness and quietness(when you haven`t got your foot into it!). I couldn`t be happier with the truck. What happened to his truck. And NO, I am in no way affiliated with Chrysler!

Mine is great also. Best truck I've ever owned. Never heard or experience this so called death wobble just on this forum. I find people like to complain and vent more than praise.

I have one of the Mexican trucks. I haven't yet found anything to complain about. I like everything about it. Fit and finish and paint is great, no rattles, gobs of power, smooth ride even after I had it lowered, nice sounding radio, no wind noise with windows up, maybe I'm just lucky with this one.

IMHO no truck from any major brand is perfect and will never be. I am on my second Ram 1500 crew cab and 5th Mopar vehicle overall and they have all been flawless! Remember there are thousands of Ram owners who also have great trucks who are not and will never be members of this or any other Ram forum. Most members of this forum probably ended up here searching for answers just like the OP! OP yes it is possible you bought a poorly built Ram and I hope you are able to get your issues resolved. I have read a few complaints about vibration and 99% of the time balancing or out of round tires from factory is the cause. I also had a noisy Hemi tick on my 2016 1500 but after an oil change at 3k miles with synthetic the noise is no longer present.

Yeah I noticed 2 or 3 dust nibs in the paint when I clayed it the weekend before last, but now that the truck is 3.5 years old they don't really bother me as much as the chips I now have after 54,900+ miles on the road

Dropped the truck off today the service advisor said they are going to go through all the issues and give me a "complimentary" alignment check, due to the vibration, if they alignment is off she's going to call me to let me know what the cost of the alignment would be before proceeding... Excuse me? I'm not paying for an alignment on a 2 week old truck that has been doing this since the beginning, thats on them if its out.

Of course we all know an alignment wouldn't cause a vibration that correlates with RPM.

I'm starting to think that considering the dealer called me 6 hours after I dropped the truck off saying it's ready, there is absolutely no way that they resolved the issues in that amount of time, guess I'll see what's going on when I go in to pick it up tomorrow.

Right now this website is down, both in the US & Canada

http://m.ramtrucks.com/webselfservice/ram/index.html

You can Chat with them & get your Window Sticker mailed, faxed, or emailed to you

I prefer just getting the EQUIPMENT LISTING, it is not as generic as a window sticker
I had mine mailed to me & now i know what my Ram has on it

The lifter tick may be an indicator of an exhaust leak where the exhaust manifold meets the block. Apparently I'm told HEMI's are known for this (had the same problem myself, sounded almost exactly the same as your issue in the video). The bolts have a tendency to sheer off, and the manifold warps ever so slightly causing this exact noise.

When the engine heats up the noise will sometimes go away as the manifold warms up and creates a better seal on the block. I had my manifold replaced because the warp put it out of spec.

I had a Grand Cherokee Hemi previously that had the manifold stud issue, this isn't it. If it was an exhaust leak it would do it every time the truck started, this isn't the problem as the truck would do it every time it starts and right now it only does it intermittently. If you listen to the truck in the video crank you will notice it actually starts weird as well because the lifters aren't opening the valves all the way. I messaged the guy on that video and he said that the lifters ended up being replaced on that truck.

Regardless I picked my truck up today, just as I expected they did NOTHING except apparently fixed the air leak on the passenger side door which I won't be able to verify until I can have someone drive my truck so I can sit in the passenger seat to listen to it, and they apparently fixed the rattle noise in the door panel by removing a loose bottle cap which I find odd because I don't let anyone drink anything in my truck, oddly enough now all of a sudden my stereo doesn't sound nearly as good as it used to and yes I verified that the equalizer settings are the same.

They're sending a picture to Chrysler for approval of replacing the window, checked the heated seat operation with a digital thermometer and apparently they both read the same, which means nothing since neither seat gets warm at all and I don't feel any heat in the seat backs. Said the vibration is normal MDS engagement noise, which for one Noise and Vibration are 2 different things and two I know its not related to the MDS at all because it does it even when you disable the MDS. I know they didn't road test it since the odometer was the same as when I dropped it off and just for added good measure they gouged the front bumper which I didn't notice until I got it home.

Trucks going in again Monday, I saw my salesman today and basically told him I want a new truck so we will see how that goes.
