Automatic Rain-Sensing Wipers

I just picked up my new RAM 1500 less than a week ago, but I have a question about the automatic rain-sensing wipers.

What happens if I go through a car wash??? Do they just turn on and start flopping all over the place and then break?

I asked my salesman, and he told me that no one has ever asked him that before, and he told me that I should hand wash my car and wipe it off with diapers from "Babies R Us."

I didn't really care for his explanation, so I asked the service manager who told me that he's never been asked that before either, we live in Arizona and don't get much rain, but he thinks that the sensors know how hard the water pressure is, and turn off automatically, so it won't be a problem.

Does anyone know? Are they really auto or do I have to turn them on and off. I really don't have a clue as to how they work, and the mini, owners manual really was no help to me. Please advise.

Margo,

Diapers? Your salesman sounds like an idiot! My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee has this feature and it works the same as the Ram. Refer to page 176/177 of the complete owner's manual. It states the following:

Rain Sensing Wipers — If Equipped

This feature senses moisture on the windshield and
automatically activates the wipers for the driver. The
feature is especially useful for road splash or overspray
from the windshield washers of the vehicle ahead. Rotate
the end of the multifunction lever to one of five settings
to activate this feature.

The sensitivity of the system can be adjusted with the
multifunction lever. Wiper delay position 1 is the least
sensitive, and wiper delay position 5 is the most sensitive.
Setting 3 should be used for normal rain conditions.
Settings 1 and 2 can be used if the driver desires less
wiper sensitivity. Setting 4 and 5 can be used if the driver
desires more sensitivity. Place the wiper switch in the
OFF position when not using the system.

NOTE:

• The Rain Sensing feature will not operate when the
wiper switch is in the low or high-speed position.

• The Rain Sensing feature may not function properly
when ice, or dried salt water is present on the windshield.

• Use of Rain-X® or products containing wax or silicone
may reduce Rain Sensing performance.

• A customer programmable feature in the Electronic Vehicle
Information Center (EVIC) allows the Rain Sensing
feature to be turned off. Refer to “Electronic Vehicle
Information Center (EVIC)/Personal Settings (Customer-
Programmable Features)” in “Understanding Your Instrument
Panel” for further information.

The Rain Sensing system has protection features for the
wiper blades and arms, and will not operate under the
following conditions:

• Low Ambient Temperature—When the ignition is first
turned ON, the Rain Sensing system will not operate
until the wiper switch is moved, vehicle speed is
greater than 0 mph (0 km/h), or the outside temperature
is greater than 32°F (0°C).

• Transmission In NEUTRAL Position — When the
ignition is ON, and the transmission is in the NEUTRAL
position, the Rain Sensing system will not
operate until the wiper switch is moved, vehicle speed
is greater than 5 mph (8 km/h), or the shift lever is
moved out of the NEUTRAL position.

Remote Start Mode Inhibit — On vehicles equipped
with Remote Starting system, Rain Sensing wipers are
not operational when the vehicle is in the remote start
mode. Once the operator is in the vehicle and has placed
the ignition switch in the RUN position, rain sensing
wiper operation can resume, if it has been selected, and
no other inhibit conditions (mentioned previously) exist.

Simple answer, turn off the wipers.
The auto sensing is only when you have it set for what would've been the intermittent modes.
So if you want them off, just rotate to the off position.

Yep, just turn em off!

Rain sensitive feature is only active when the wipers are set in any of the intermittent settings.

^^THAT! The factory default in EVIC is off so you have to turn the function on to begin with and then turn the intermittent knob to one of the sensitivity settings and the vehicle must be moving at a speed greater than 0mph.

You can disable them thru the settings on the main dash screen system. Then after car wash

You can disable them thru the settings on the dash system during the car wash and then enable them again to work automatically.
