We have a 09 dodge ram 1500 5.7 hemi 130000 miles. This summer we decided the spark plugs needed to be changed. We changed them at home. Took our vacation and sometime either before or after spark plugs noticed a ticking noise on passenger side .About september driving along the check engine light came on , cylinder 4 , we started researching and changed the coil packs , wiring harness , nothing changed. The light would go off 4 a day or 2 then back on . November came and we were going to take a trip wanted the truck to be running right, went to dealer ship to buy a fuel injector, dodge advised us something serious was likely and shouldnt be driving it. We put it in the shop they broke into the engine, everything seamed fine ,we did have the broken manifold bolts , which caused some noise, they found a rat nest around the block that looked like they chewed on a wire that went to cylinder 4 . They fixed that $17 part plus $1000 for time and labour and digging into the engine. we didnt fix the mani bolts.they gave us back our truck . Drove find seemed liked eveything was fine. Then 2 days later the light came back. We took it back and they said the computer hadnt reset the code and it was from before it was fixed. A week later the light is back on, took it back. They looked at it a few days, told use either trade it in or get a new engine but couldnt tell us what was wrong with out another $700 to dig back in the engine farther.. we bought some oil additive to help quit lifters but didnt make a big difference.dont know what else to do.any help ideas suggestions

So they told you your truck was fixed, you paid them a grand, and it turns out that they didn't actually fix it. Was the work not warrantied? Because as far as I'm concerned they should be on the hook to fix it. My dad had a 2001 Honda Accord that we were taking back and forth to and from the dealer for 20,000 miles chasing an oil leak, but most of those trips were on their dime since the work was warrantied.

What kind of plugs did you use? If they were platinum or iridium instead of plain ol' copper ones you can have problems; the coils weren't designed for the hotter plugs

We didnt know we needed to take the truck in at 5 years for the lofetime powertrain warranty, so i guess thats on us. They said they could dig into it and it could cost big $$ trying to find exactly what is wrong .so we took our truck back home. Its also our only vehicle.and the plugs were bought from the dealer mopar. they also replace the ones going to cylinder 4 again.

We just use normal cheapest gas , we use exxon sometimes but we will try that kind out. And we keep thinging maybe an injector, we are having guy look at it today to get his option. We have changed the coil packs and also moved them around to make sure they wernt faulty. We have 2 people that keep saying it proably electrical, but if that was the case for the misfire code why do we hear a tick. And its pretty loud and has a " rythem " to it. Idk.

Had the same issue on my 11, $3000.00 under warranty thankfully. My friend the did the work said it is caused when the mds engages there is slack on the lifter, roller turns sideways and wears the camshaft down. The 5.7l charger have a recall for the issue but the trucks don't. I was told by my mechanic buddy to drive in manual to stop the engine from going into MDS.

I think it is a lifter issue period, mds or no mds. I have always driven mine in manual mode since brand new and at 101000, lifter seized and of course wiped out the cam, and you are right on the money @ 3k. Ram wouldn,t help with the repair at all and that was a tough pill to swallow 1k out of warranty

Well what a story. My 09 with 297,700 was at the dealer .
1st the mds went out , fixed then more codes . Replaced the cam lifter. Tappets. 3500.00 under the life time , I have the max care lifetime. 100.00 for mds.
Took it home on Friday, 20 miles out the service engine light came on . Back to them today to look .
I'll show them this article .

Sorry for late update. Replaced cam and all lifters , all gaskets myself , used the rapair manuel that we bought at auto zone , alls parts were bought from dodge. Worked on this for about 2 weeks , whenever i got a chance. Could be a 3 day project if you have the patience. Cost alittle over $1500 , compared to dealership quote of 3 to 8 grand. Fished it about mid January now mid march , everything seems to be okay. Did have to flush the oil a few times and need to change again 500 miles later. Had to refill the coolant. This can be done !! , i have never really worked on a vehicle that in depth. Had a few people that new a thing or two to give pointers along the way. Hope this helps someone.

Well its just like my 09 ram 1500 hemi. I was in Los Angles for a family trip when I gunned it to get onto traffic with I noticed a misfire and lost huge amount of power almost got hit due to not gaining enough speed with traffic. If I did not floor it the truck would run normal. Any time I gave more than about 3k rpm the truck would misfire and start stumbling then the check engine light would come on. I still had a few days in LA before I could make my trip home but babied the truck for a while. Then on the 400 mile trip home seemed to be running fine no issues until I needed throttle. I took it into dodge and they had it for a week before telling me it needed a reflash. I picked up the truck and as soon as I drove off the lot the check engine light came back on. but guess what my truck happened to be ready after the shop had closed. I pumped gas in the truck since it was empty drove back to the dealer only one mechanic was left cleaning I dragged him to my truck and demanded he take a look and sure enough misfiring on 2 cylinders cant remember which ones but were on passenger side. left truck again for 2 weeks turns out that the cam and roller lifters had failed. the rollers were welded to the lifter itself even had a flat spot across the lifter. happened around 75k but nearly cost me 11k for all the work in 2013 good thing it was covered under warranty

Multi Displacement System, aka cylinder deactivation where 4 cylinders shut down under light load to save fuel
