Error Codes

I wanted to see if anyone could provide direction is what to replace to clear the following error codes?

P0456 and P0441

My check gas cap light has been on and I have replaced the gas cap. I had problems passing emissions last year because of the gas cap and I figured that this was the easiest thing to replace to see if it would clear the codes.

I called the dealership and they said "we need to diagnose because it could relate to 40+ parts". Seems to me that they want to run up a bill for something that can be fixed pretty easily. Thanks in advance.

P0456 is an OBD-II generic code that the engine control module (ECM) has detected a very small leak in the evaporative system

P0441 "Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow" is set when the computer sees that there is not enough flow from the purge valve

Basically this means that there is a problem in the EVAP system. The computer will command the purge control valve open and if it does not sense the right amount of vacuum then it will set this code.

The purge valve is part of the EVAP system. The purpose of this system is to take all of the excess fuel vapor from the gas tank and store it until it can be burned in the engine. If it weren't for this system then all of those vapors would be vented into the atmosphere. Let's find out what are the main culprits of this OBD2 code:

What Causes Code P0441?
Faulty Purge Control Solenoid
Faulty Purge Control Valve
Damaged Wiring to the Purge Solenoid
Less Common Causes
Faulty Computer
Restriction in the EVAP System
Faulty Vacuum Switch

Both are part of same system.

Usually this P0456 code is caused by an incorrect or faulty gas cap.

Filling the fuel tank with the engine running could conceivable cause this code as well or if the cap wasn't properly tightened.

Any of the following could also be the cause:

A small leak in any of the EVAP hoses or fuel tank hoses
A small leak in the purge valve or vent valve
The EVAP Canister may be leaking

First, using a scan tool activate the vent solenoid, sealing the system. Then monitor the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor.
If the system is sealing properly, the number will stay consistent. If is isn't, the pressure sensor will show that as well.
If the system slowly leaks, use a smoke machine and watch for smoke exiting the system at any EVAP component. Any where there is smoke exiting the system, that is the faulty component.
Do not pressurize the EVAP system with air pressure. Doing so can damage the purge and vent solenoids in the system.

There is a very good Youtube video about Trouble Shooting & Repairing this code

I suggest that you run the checks described in the Youtube video for p0456, before you begin working on this next Trouble Code

P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses.
The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage.
Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

EVAP emission canister purge is controlled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented to atmosphere. A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the PCM commands purge and sees that the switch is closed (indicating no detected purge flow) P0441 is set.

Causes A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

Bad vacuum switch Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
Open in PCM purge command circuit
Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
Faulty purge solenoid
Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
Bad PCM

With a P0441 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

Common Chrysler fix - Replace Leak Detection Pump / LDP
Repair damaged EVAP lines or canister
Repair open or short in voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
Repair open in PCM purge command circuit
Replace purge Solenoid
Replace vacuum switch
Repair restriction in Evap line or canister or solenoid
Repair resistance in purge connector
Replace PCM

U = communication
it involves how a Sensor, connections, wiring etc. communicates with other sensors & which ever Module is suppose to sending information to

as an example:
each wheel/tire has a TPMS Sensor that reads air pressure, it continually sends information wirelessly to the Body Module & that module sends the information to the instrument panel through wiring.

1 = Manufacturer specific, meaning it is a code that only applies to Chrysler/Fiat products

2nd 1 = Emission management

bc i can't find too much, but i think it has to do with the Transmission
check the transmission temperature & do a seat of the pants feel of how it shifts :4-dontknow:
