Just tried removing my fiberglass tonneau

And its a pain in the ass. The 4 brackets are easily removed with just a bolt and bracket on each one but whatever seal they used on the bed rails when it was installed is tough as nails.

I watched the youtube video on how to remove it, and everything went smooth until it was time to actually take it off. The front of the rails started to pull of relatively easily but the hinge part near the cab did not want to come loose. I even laid in the bed and tried to muscle it off.

I need to pick up a stove tomorrow, a vanity for a buddy and about 35 cases of laminate flooring next week. Would be alot easier with this thing removed. As soon as I figure out how to get it off without destroying anything, Im selling it and buying a roll up cover. Not as secure, but definitely more practical when youre going to use your truck as a truck and not a big ass trunk.

I think it depends on how it was installed, sounds to me like they used super glue or something. I have a Leer 700 and although the installation had some issues it is not secured permanently to the bed rails. If I remove the clamps it will just slide right off. However this is not something I can do by myself and I have never had mine completely off.

Sounds like they used body sealant! Try a razor blade between the bed rails and the frame of the tonneau. If you have access to a heat gun try heating it and see if you can get it to come off. I didn't seal my hard cover and I have never gotten any water inside. That way it comes off nice and easy. I'm an EMT so i always have medical equipment in the back and I trust that it stays dry just the way I have it.

I have an ARE LSX or whatever model it is. The fact is was 25 degrees when I tried to take it off might have had something to do with the seal not coming loose. I am going to mess with it again when its a little warmer and during the day, rather than at 9 at night with nothing but a shop light to work with.

Year old thread but going to bump this back to the top. Going to attempt removing my ARE tonneau tomorrow so I can install my new bakflip VP. Supposed to be about 70 degrees so Im hoping the seals wont be quite as stubborn this go round.

Anybody has any issues removing theirs since I posted this thread a year ago?

My how much a warmer temperature makes a difference when removing seals for a tonneau cover. 4 brackets came off and with little pressure all the seals did as well. Now I need to get it sold!

I hate removing my Mopar hard cover.
I rig 4 ratchet straps up,and lift it off with them, and built some hooks so i can lock the cover in the closed postion.
Only way i can remove the damn thing by myself, and it's time consuming, making a million trips around the box running the rachet straps up is exercise, lol
I'll never buy another Mopar hard cover:smiledown:

I havent even "used" my VP to haul anything yet and already love it. Was putting the finishing touches on it last night with the cab bumpers, drain tubes, and prop arms and to be able to fold it to the cab and get up in the truck is so nice. Felt so good I took a broom to the bed and gave it a long overdue sweep out.

Only negative I see which is EXTREMELY minor is having to open the tailgate to access anything. Atleast with the Fiberglass you only have to open the tonneau and can leave the tailgate closed. Clearly a minimal inconvenience.

Until my wife decides to slam it shut with the VP still closed...
