loud whine at startup

Hello everybody! I have a 13 RAM 4x4 with the hemi & 6speed tranny with 4000 miles. I'm experiencing a LOUD whine after startup. Sounds like a tranny or power steering pump that has no oil in it. I hear it the loudest at a cold start. It does quiet down after warm up but never really goes away. The truck doesn't need to be in drive & moving for me to hear the whine but its present then too. It's actually pretty embarassing to have a great looking truck & have it sound like that. Anyhow, is anybody else having that sound? I'm thinking about taking it to the dealer but would like to know beforehand if its a normal thing. Thanks in advance for your input!

So when I got out of work this morn I started my truck and the whining sound was the worst I've ever heard it. Decided to go to my dealer to listen to a couple other trucks start up. Not one of the 3 I started sounded like mine does. They all had the hemi cold start tick for a second or two but that doesn't concern me. Now I have a service appt next Tuesday. I sure do hope I don't have a bad tranny. I must have drivin a good 4-5 miles before the sound quieted down this morn.

My service appt was this morn. Just like any other day, I started my truck, heard the loud whine. I headed to my dealer to drop it off. Was told they would call as soon as they have any info. Even though I'm a 3rd shifter I wasn't able to sleep most of the day only because I didnt want to miss the phone call. They hadn't called as of 4:30 so o called them. Now they are telling me they started my truck several times today but heard nothing. I reminded them that I hear the whine every single time I start it and can hear it standing 75ft away. Now they are keeping it overnight to "try" again Wednesday morn. I had a feeling they were gonna try giving me the runaround. I suspect I'm gonna have to stop being so friendly with them.

Is your truck the Black out edition? I am looking at a 2014. I have read some other threads about the paint on Black out edition.

@Fullmetal, yep, black out edition. I looked over the whole truck VERY good before I accepted it, paying very close attention to the paint. Besides the very slight orange peel that production vehicles have, the paint was flawless. I couldn't ( and still cant) find any swirls, dirt under the paint, different shading, nothing. But with that being said, I did notice another one on the lot that had a spot on the pass front fender that looked as if the metal had been sanded pretty roughly and then just painted right over. I could almost feel the grooves in the metal. I guess you'll just have to look it over really well in good light.

So I was back at the service dept again this morn. I requested to go with the tech when he starts up my truck since he claims to not hear any noises. To my surprise they sent the tech, another tech, and the service manager out with me. And sure enough, the loud whine was there as soon as it started. The service manager immediately looked at the guy who claimed to not hear it. I asked if i was right to think the noise isnt normal. The manager said "No, that is not normal" while still glaring at the tech. Now i just gotta wait to see what they do about it...

I am losing faith (and patience) with my dealers service dept. I was under the impression they were gonna figure out what was wrong with my truck on wednesday after we all heard the noise and I was told that it wasn't normal. Come to find out they waited till thursday evening and are once again claiming they dont hear anything. They kept it overnight and are gonna try again today, so they say. If they don't get this issue taken care of today, im afraid I will have to go there & raise hell!

Picked my truck up from the service dept yesterday. They told me the problem is with the tranny cooler and tranny cooler lines. They are gonna replace them as soon as the parts come in. Say there are very low quantities available and would probably take a week. They never really told me what was wrong with them so in kinda stumped. Can anybody explain to me what would be wrong with the cooler or lines that would cause a loud whine?

So i finally got a postcard in the mail telling me the parts came in. The card says the parts are the tranny cooler, bypass valve, and has another part # w/o a descroption. I'm guessing the 3rd part is the tranny cooler lines. I wasn't expecting the bypass valve cuz they hadn't mentioned it before. Im dropping it off Friday morning. Man I'm getting anxious! Can't wait till i can actually hear my exhaust again!

Dropped my truck off this morn, went home with a loaner truck. Was expecting my truck to be done around noon. Instead I get a call from the service dept saying there is a problem. They tell me they ordered the wrong parts and the new ones won't be in till Monday, and ill have to leave my truck there till then. So once again I'm stuck driving around in a loaner. This has to be a joke! Really, where's the hidden camera?

I read this thinking that you were going to end up writing that it turned out to be the coolant lines causing the noise, where they pass over the frame
That fix was to cut the side of a hose, slip it over the coolant lines & zip tie it closed

I suppose that it still could be the coolant lines. I'm not convinced that my dealer really knows what the problem is. If my truck still isn't fixed when I get it back, ill definitely look into that. I'm hearing the noise the loudest on the passenger side front door area. Is that where the lines cross over the frame? I haven't crawled under it myself yet to look it over.

Just got home from picking up my truck, new parts installed! First impression is its a lot quieter in general. However I haven't heard a cold start yet. I also noticed my tranny temp is running about 25 degrees cooler now, right about 105 F. I asked the service tech again what was wrong with the parts they replaced and he wasn't sure. He did say they sent out a star report and it was Chrysler that told them which parts to swap out, as if they have dealt with this before. Anyhow, its good to have my truck back!

@fastback I took it to Gary Miller. I will say one thing about them. While I'm not thrilled it took a month to get this taken care of, I can't speak badly about any of the people I dealt with. They were friendly and courtious. That goes a long way with me. Much better than any experience ive ever had at Humes.

Mine does it too when it's really cold outside on the first start of the day.
I'm not too worried about it as long as it's still covered under warranty.
I have a feeling it's related to the wine at slow speeds with the fluid going through the the transmission cooler lines. It just hasn't bothered me enough to change the clamp for the lines and it's too damn cold out to work on it.

If the problem that you have wasn't so damn annoying to say the least, I was going to make a smart comment..... like at the end of all this frustration.... and set backs.......you came out saying that Chip Foose came out and told you, "You Have Been Overhauled". Sorry coundn't resist.
I hope everything gets resolved quickly.

This here may be your issue and would be worth checking.

Ive been having this issue lately too. I only noticed it when I park my truck outside of my attached garage and it sits awhile (like 8 hours or so). Usually it is above 32 degrees f in my garage when I park it in there and I never hear the squeal or whine noise. I used my remote start after getting out of work for the day while walking towards my truck to get her going before I get to it a few times and have heard a squeal noise and didnt really think it was my truck because its pretty much new and I was about 75 yards from it when it started. Today I waited till I got to my truck before I started it outside of work. It was about 10 degrees out. When I started it there was a very loud squeal but lasted less than 30 seconds then stopped. Pretty annoying. Lots of fellow employees hearing it (chevy guys). Anyone have this issue fixed by the dealer yet?
